1 shrub blooming profusely...its mate has nothing at all

Dear garden folks

weirdness, I think

I have 2 Lovely Fairies planted at the same time in the same soil in the same light maybe 6 feet from each other. Lovely Fairy #1 is blooming like crazy and is fantastic. LF #2 has/had maybe 3 or flowers and has very few buds.

Any thoughts and or ideas would be greatly azppreciated

When planted?
New bushes often take a while to mature. A nice blooming first year bush is great but not necessarily the way it happens. The growth and size of the root system is important.
The saying is "The first year they sleep, the second year they creep, the third year they leap." Any behaving diffently like Lovely Fairy #1 is a plus.
I don't expect great things from my roses for a couple of years.

I planted them both last fall. There is a 3rd shrub that I gave to a neighbor that is also flowering profusely. So you think she will bloom next summer?

Kay, I can't think of any rose that's going to be that dense. I've done similarly with Iceberg here, which works well, particularly when you hand select the plants for lack of prickles. They DO vary quite a bit! Four feet isn't very tall for the roses we're discussing and the whole area only appears to be about four by three feet, which also isn't very large. Personally, I'd think you would be MUCH better off using something like a Myrtis communis compacta, Dwarf Myrtle. If you want to form it like that so it's dense and perfect, you can form a chicken wire cage to the size and shape you desire, then plant it densely with the Dwarf Myrtle, keeping it trimmed tightly to the wire form, as they do for topiary. It is ever green; nothing eats it; it smells heavenly; grows virtually anywhere, in any level of sun; flowers nicely with attractive blue berries which don't stain and aren't poisonous; and it gets very dense and soft. It would be beautiful and it wouldn't bite the mail man (or you!). Plus, there is NO deadheading to keep it flowering and it doesn't get ANY fungal diseases. What could be more perfect? when in livonia.. where i had a great MI peat soil ... i could GET AWAY WITH ... sticking a potted plant.. right into the soil.. and never looking back ... the MI peat was 'close enough' ... then i moved to adrian.. where it is all mineral sand ... if i plant a pot with VERY HIGH PEAT potting media.. in sand.. EVENTUALLY ... the sand will wick all the moisture out of the peat ... and once that happens.. peat can become nearly water repellant ... and eventually.. the plant will die.. and this goes from perennials.. thru conifers.. and into trees ... though if the plant is aggressive enough to grow out of the peat.. its a non-issue ... so for me.. its the DIVERGENCE OF SOIL TYPES... which is a killer ... so over the years.. i have found that PROPER PLANTING ... at the PROPER TIME [FALL/SPRING IN MI] ... allows near full bare rooting.. and removal of the problem media/soil .. and while the roots are nudie.. some root pruning if horribly root bound ... and then planting into the native soil ... the issue would be NO DIFFERENT.. if you were in bad clay.. with peat potting media .. the clay MIGHT hold too much water at certain times of year.. and the peat would only hold more .... and very often.. a plant that rots its roots in spring.. will not LOOK dead.. until the heat of summer ... burns all the leaves off it ... and then we have a hard time.. figuring out.. when it really died ... ken

Try a Galvezia: tough as nails, drought tolerant, bright red snapdragon blooms beloved of hummers. These are the best: 'Boca Rosa' - forms a dense mound with arching stems reaching to 4 feet tall. In the summer through early fall it produces tubular bright red flowers which are flared at the lip, resembling small snapdragon flowers. Plant in full sun to moderate shade in well-drained soil. It is drought tolerant, especially if planted in shade. foliage is a larval food source for our local Checkerspot butterfly. Prune occasionally for denser growth 'Firecracker' is more compact.

Thanks! looks like you will have to wait a bit for Lavender Ice - HMF doesn't have any nurseries listed in the US - strange thought it has been around for a while. Kublakan, I'll admit that although that photo of Lavender Pinocchio is impressive that's about all which is impressive. I have alllll kinds of plants that bloom like that. I have Crepe Myrtles, Dahlias, Peonies, Hydrangeas, and so on that are planted side by side and one blooms and the other might not. I don't have a clue why but I was wanting to see how you like Lovely Fairy. Isn't it a great little bush? At least the one thats blooming. ha ha!! Mine is going through its third flush right now. If you want one a little darker and shorter I would try the Fairy Queen. It blooms just as good as The Fairy and Lovely Fairy. Judy

Maybe there was a dead fish in the planting hole for the one that's blooming. You may never know. :)

Hi Judy

One of the things i like best is the range of white to pink to dark pink. She always looks so very alive. The flushes are constantly putting forth new flowers. The only problem i have is that when a flush has spent flowers along with new ones ans i don't know how to deadhead the spent ones. What do you do about that?

I cut off the little clusters after all the petals have fallen or the blooms have dried. Frequently another new cluster has formed right next to an old one so I'm very careful when removing the spent one. On a larger bush, it's a daily constant job to keep the spent clusyers off.

I agree with Karl. I try to watch where I cut off the spent clusters so I won't snip off any new growth or clusters. I think I am going to order me the white one this fall. My sister in law has it and says it blooms as good as the others. Judy
