Optimal height for wheelchair accessible bed

Hello all,

We are planning on adding a "senior" bed at our community garden, and would like to make it accessible for people in wheelchairs. Any dimensions or other pertinent information (I did print out a few of the posts about path materials) is welcome.

well, it depends on how high the chairs are really and how flexible the people who are going to use the bed are. a perfect height would be at least 30 inches high so they can reach across it easily and no more than 3 ft across. unless you are designing it for more than one person to work in the same bed. You might want to ask the people who are going to use it how they think it would best serve them. That would make them feel like they are really apart of the plan instead of just having one built for them and saying "here, plant something" I hope that helps. Good luck

My beds are 2' high, and are perfect for me. Most wheelchairs are the same height (the seat is 19" off the ground), so this will probably work for most people.

The width is more individualized because it depends on how far over you can lean without falling over. My trunk muslces aren't all that rigorous, and I have to work at working the back of my beds, 2' away. I could lean an elbow in the bed for support, but then I'm compressing my soil. (I've been thinking of getting a piece of wood to lay across the bed to lean on when I'm working the back.)

Needless to say, you want to use the thinnest material you can find to make the beds (untreated wood, probably)so you don't waste that small area that's within reach.

If you're in an area where people have horses or other large animals, you can get their leaky old stock watering tanks. They are a perfect height, and sizeable enough for theme beds. I've got 2 herb beds in stock tanks and also 3 for tomatoes and peppers. The added benefit is that the voles can't get at the goodies inside.

I would think if you construct a table at the appropriate height for wheelchair bound youngsters and put an edge around it to form a box, it would work. From what I have read, you should make it so folks can easily reach into it without straining and make it only about 4 feet across at the most. I think if you are dealing with children, it would probably be even narrower than that. I also think the pressure treated wood would be okay if you line the table with plastic, which would also help to preserve the wood as well. Hi Tom, I suppose it depends upon the degree of sensory participation; planting, weeding, picking and cropping, smelling or just looking. It could also depend upon the varieties being grown; tall, medium or short. I think all countries have organisations that represent people with various disabilities and they should be right on top of this issue. I'm sure they'll at least have an opinion, that is if you haven't already approached them. If your having trouble contacting such an organisation, I'm sure your local hospital or local council could give you a lead. I would think that too low would be better than too high, as it would be easier to raise the surface level as opposed to lowering it, simply by putting boards around and building up. You could also try it yourself by borrowing a wheelchair and see what works for yourself and then consult with the groups further from a position of some insight.

Hi All, 1) Yes, we ABSOLUTELY wish to live in our home until we die. End of discussion, period. We have spent the last few years really envisioning and considering how we live, and how we wish to live. We do not wish to have children, or 'fur babies', and will be willing this residence into a library/halfway house for teens escaping abusive relationships. So designing for accessibility (which includes being blind, deaf, etc) is important. 2) Our tastes don't change. We love french country, 'Castle-esque' looks. Nothing in our house is 'new' or 'modern'. We both aren't particularly fond of change (not even paint colors!), and after moving over a dozen times, we are tired of it. We don't replace appliances until they break - yes I still have a big old tube TV in my living room! One more house, and then i get to stay there until i die in it! 3) As for medical issues - plantar fasciitis, DH has bad knees, and hip replacements run in my family. As well, shoudl I ever break my leg skiing or something, Id appreciate the extra manouvering room. 4) I read a fair bit of the ADA, and the Canadian Guidelines as well. I've just struggled to find a good comparison of wheelchair+drawers vs wheelchair+hightoekick.

@mtpo Have you considered attaching your ramp to the back door instead of the garage steps? I empathize with this all. I have a fab little house with all budget-friendly concepts for being accessible, but the doors did end up quite a bit off the ground: like 4 steps worth. I would have had to cope with this if I had been able to afford an attached carport, so I know it's tricky to try and do it with steps, let alone a ramp. In my case, though, the mistake was partly mine. The builder and I went out to my raw lot and decided where to put the house (imagine being able to do this!), a few feet here, a few feet there, a little more angled to the south, a little more privacy for my bedroom window, the most exposure for the solar panels on my roof..... The two of us forgot that the doors would be quite a bit above ground because of a slope in the lot. And then, I made it worse because after we measured everything and laid it out, I asked if he could please move the whole house over 2 feet. I wouldn't have swapped that experience for the world, though. And out of the goodness of his heart, the builder himself made me a most magnificent set of front steps, wide and with sturdy rails. And when I said how much I appreciated him, he did the back stairs, too! At some point, I will get one of those nifty metal dock-ramps. ******* Aha!
