Comments (6)Very pretty! I've never heard of that one. Looks a little like my Headliner, I love the pink shading. Andrea...See MoreHow large do Maman Cochet's blooms get?
Comments (4)I'm still getting (rare) tiny blooms.. Yes it is hot, the rose is in a black plastic 4g pot on hardscape and still quite young (though budded) but.. I'm starting to question its id although I have not had a mislabeled (vs misidentified) rose from Beales yet. It looks more like a China than a Tea to me.. sort of.. The buds appear and open up in no time resulting in tiny messy blooms. I have pinched off the current crop of buds but will post pics of the next ones here in an effort to verify its id....See MoreSunburned 'Cl. Maman Cochet'?
Comments (8)Hi Melissa, can girdlers can affect the plant's ability to push water upward as they interrupt the cambium, the circulatory system of the plant. They eat the cambium, leading to the death of the tissues above their damage. Water stress probably attracts the girdlers as they seem to attack stressed plants faster and worse than non stressed ones. The best defense against sun burn is shade...whether it's from adjacent plants, the specific plant's foliage, temporary structures placed close enough to them to afford relief or trunk paint, such as is often used in orchards to prevent sun scald on the trunks. Any white latex paint should suffice. If the Cl Maman Cochets are receiving irrigation, there are dissolved salts in that water. They build up in the soil due to evaporation and the plants' use and can become toxic very quickly. As the salts concentrate, the foliage color and size as well as the amount and quality of growth are quickly affected, causing the plants to be off color, foliage smaller and less dense and the wood to age more rapidly. Hopefully there is some sort of organic mulch on the gray clay to help insulate it against the direct sun rays, keeping it cooler, reducing surface evaporation and water loss. If at all possible, I would recommend creating berms around the plants to hold water, so it can percolate through the roots to help expel carbon dioxide from the roots; hydrate the plant and surrounding soil and help flush the salt build up from the root zone. Add the insulating mulch layer which will break down, generating Humic Acid, which will help condition the clay, improving its tilth and releasing the salts and other locked-up minerals. You may have to figure out something to shield the canes from the worst of the sun exposure or paint them with the white (or other light colored) latex paint. There are horticultural trunk paints specifically formulated for this use and they may be less toxic to the environment than traditional house paint, but when you are backed into a corner, you have to use what you can obtain. You can also probably figure out some way to use stakes and old bed sheets or tee shirts to provide some sun relief for the affected canes. They might not be pretty, but there are definitely ways to help protect an ailing plant until it can recuperate and overcome what ails it. Good luck!...See MoreMaman Cochet-how bad does it ball?
Comments (10)Let me explain. My climate is warm to cool from fall to spring when it usually is quite humid (65 to 95% relative humidity depending on weather and time of day). It is warm to hot in the summer (middle of June to end of September) when air humidity is usually low. MC balls all the time from fall to spring while it doesn't in the summer. The problem is it doesn't bloom much during the summer and what blooms I get are small and insignificant. Best blooms are during the cooler seasons but then they mostly ball... In the rare instances when we get some cool and dry weather then its blooms are very nice. But it's rare in my climate. No need for rain, of which we get very little, to ruin MC's blooms. Air humidity and night dew is enough. I guess that in a cool winter desert climate things will be different. My only rose which balls more than MC is Tipsy. But Tipsy blooms nicely during the warmer drier season.....See Morejerijen
