Full sun or part shade in Florida?

I've been growing potted roses for a few years now in SW Florida. The ones around my pool are ok but the ones in part/mostly shade look MUCH healthier and vibrant green where the leaves on the ones in Full Sun look washed out and take a while to re-bloom. Temps this time of year is everyday highs in the 90s. What say you?

It really depends on the variety. I tend to go a little less sun when I can. Tampa Bay here. Containers need more watering as a rule. I have seen roses have steam coming from root balls before especially if they are in pots. I would say morning sun is best, followed by late afternoon sun. Full afternoon sun can be asking for trouble. The smaller the rose / mini's etc. the less sun I give them. No science behind it ...it is just what works for me. I live in St. Pete and grow around 500 roses. Wish I could be of more help tho.

So none of youe roses are in full sun? I know mine do better with less sun, but it goes counter to the FAQ that state 8-10 hours of full sun as being ideal.

Mine (at my old house) was in full sun all day and thrived. I took cuttings to bring here and have put them in mostly sun and close to the garage to keep them from freezing. It worked but then a week ago or so, caterpillars got to them OVERNIGHT! but their on their way back after being sprayed.

Sounds interesting but other factors do effect the readings - time of day for instance. For the cost of a roll of film and processing I took a day and from my upstairs bedroom window took photos every hour from sunup to sunset, in early June and again in August as the arc of the sun does change. I then made a sketch of my yard and location of planting beds and was able to calculate hours of sunlight on each section. Some areas got only midday light, others only early am or pm and actual amount of light was considerably less than I thought. But anything that helps pick plants appropriately is very appreciated!

As far as what cultivars do best in full sun I won't make any suggestions except try and find out the parentage of the ones you want. Tenifolia parentage likes more shade. My suggestion is on you day off, go to the spot you think you want to plant in several times of that day to see exactly where the sun is. Tell your family you need time away get a book you have been wanting to read, a good drink, and a comfortable chair. Sit in the shade and watch. Depending on the season what you see will give you a good idea of sun strength in a particular spot. Early blooming flowers benefit from the sunlight and build energy before the leaves are on the trees and then go dorment until next season. Think of the sun as a large hose. Sunlight as water. Depending on the distance and angle if you spray straight down at an orange(think plant)you get everything wet except right under the overhang. From an angle part will be in bright sun, part in light spray (non-yellow light rays) and the part directly around the orange receives no water except for runoff. Perhaps someone can explain why some plants need more of the yellow spectrum than others. At the distance from the sun to earth unless directly under something all the other light waves should hit the shady side of anything.

It sounds like your options are pretty limited. Fast growing trees are going to get really big. Most fast growing trees also end up being weak-wooded and short lived. 'Green Giant' thujas grow quickly and have far few problems than Leyland cypresses (which I would definitely NOT recommend), but the Green Giants are going to get pretty large eventually (and very possibly much larger than you'd want). You may want to consider a vine-covered fence or even a hardy type of bamboo with a root barrier.

I am in GA, close to Tallahassee and my roses that are doing the best get sun in the morning until about 10:30, then shade until about 4pm then sun again. The ones getting the most sun look the worst. They are planted along my fenceline and are not trhiving like the others.

particentral, isn't that interesting? Maybe since we are so far south, the "more full sun the better" statement doesn't apply to us. I found this true with hot peppers as well.

If I add up all the hours of sun they get at least 6-7 hours, just not in the hottest part of the day. I found it rather odd but they are thriving and growing like crazy, so I wont argue it with them! I plan on leaving them right there next year! trhe fencline roses though are still looking sad. I may have to replace them with Knockouts. COme to think of it though, the knockouts that are in FULL sun all day are not doing as well as my hybrid teas. My landscaper didnt get it either....

Odd as I moved all my full sun potted roses to the west side fence line and within 2-3 days they look like they are breaking new basal growth and the leaves are regaining their lost vigor.

I discovered that when leaving on vacation and putting some of my potted roses in a shady area (so they would be near sprinklers) that they came alive. All of my lavendar roses are in areas of about 2-3 hours of sun a day. Those are on fortuniana in the ground. It doesn't seem to matter whether it is morning or afternoon. They are absolutely thriving. I have about 6 potted roses, all colors under the eaves and new life is sprouting on all of them. They love it.
