making a deer-hedge from native rose under native hawthorns?
Comments (3)I think you're going to need a deer fence to keep them out of your orchard...but planting in front of the fence will look nice and help disguise the fence. From what I've read, you can either do an 8' deer fence, all the way around, or two fences (about 4' apart) that are 4' tall. I don't know if this will work, but it's supposed to, according to some other forums. I've also read that an electric wire or two will work, but not here. We have an electric fence around our horse pasture (seven wires, two hot ones) and the deer jump over, crawl under and even walk through...very carefully. As for the roses, my deer like to chew on the new growth, but I plant them against the house or fence...and I put lots of lavender, other herbs and deer resistant plants in front of them. They still reach though in the fall, and nibble, but an exposed bush will get eaten down, pretty fast. Butterfly bushes are not thorny, but the deer don't care much for the taste. They also ignore (for the most part...babies taste almost everything) coneflowers, cosmos, daisies, lilacs, bee balm, mint, lavender, alyssum, marigolds, pontilia, blueberries, stock, tomatoes, acorn squash, sunflowers, white petunias (don't know why) pansies, violas, columbine, sweet woodruff and the strawberries, if they're growing under other shrubs or herbs they don't like. All deer are probably different, but mine don't pay much attention to these plants...so except for my roses, that's pretty much what I plant, here :)...See MoreAnyone growing Rose d'Amour, the species hybrid?
Comments (3)Mine grew only to 5 feet as it was too busy spreading all over the area. If happy, this rose will sucker and any half inch piece left in the soil will grow quickly into another Rose d'Amour. Never had any problems with disease. One of the more attractive of the species with a light fragrance....See MoreSpecies roses growing wild in your area?
Comments (18)I've been actually doing some research on this for a while now. It's really hard to find roses here in the Philippines and even more so with species roses since people aren't familiar with what roses really look like in the wild. When you say "rose" or "rosas" here, people will only recognize modern, double-flowered roses. Botanical records have stated that species roses that were last spotted in the 90's were R. luciae (also known as R. philippinensis, and the species from which wichurana came) and R. transmorriensis Hayata (a.k.a. R. luzoniensis). The former originally came from Japan while the latter is native to Taiwan. Both grow in Luzon and the latter is said to have grown in our mountainous regions. HMF states Japanese records show that R. bracteata came from Cagayan River on Luzon to Japan around the 1800's so I guess R. bracteata is our native rose. So far I haven't been to the mountains much to actually look out for those roses but one day I'll plan to see them growing in my country and maybe grow them in my garden. A thing to note is that all of these roses are white. Quite a coincidence. :D This post was edited by Resolute_Noir on Wed, Dec 11, 13 at 7:17...See MoreAnyone growing Austrian Copper rose?
Comments (4)There were these roses when this house was purchased by my parents in 1969 faLL. mY YOUNG FRIEND LATER CALLED THEM MY aUSTRIAN COPPERS AND WE LOVED TO SIT IN MY SWING THERE. tHE LOCAL DENTIST CAME EAACH DAAY TO SMELL THEM IN THE ALLEY. i DO NOT UNDERSTAND PEOPLE OR NURSERIES SAYING UNPLEASANT SMELL; IT is RATHER A MUSKY ODOR but not unpleasant; Many people called this Joseph's coat! I believe I have perhaps both. What I hate is that the yellow has taken over somewhat! This I do not care for but they have the same musky scent. If you want true colors, never introduce a yellow! They do bloom once! Rather off and on now! Please consider a Joseph's coat insteade of or as well! Good luck! If you are cold: Bud Union: two inches BELOW!...See Moreroseseek
