Questions for Mid-Atlantic gardeners & Hartwood Roses

My husband and I are starting rose beds for the following roses. As part of my planning, I want to make sure that we plan appropriately space wise (I've made that mistake in the past). If you have any of the following roses in this general area, we would really appreciate knowing how tall/big your plants are. The size I indicate by each rose is the average size I've read.

Charles Albanel: Height of 1'-4'. Width of up to 3'.

Polareis: Height of 5'-7'. Width of 6'- 7'.

Hansa: Height of 5' to 7-8'. Width of 4'-7'.

Basyes Blueberry: Height of 4Â-6Â/5'-8'. Width of 5'.

Caldwell Pink: Height of 3'- 4'. Width of 3Â-4Â.

Mutabilis: Height of 4Â-6Â/4'-10'. Width of 3'- 6'.

Carefree Beauty: Height of 4'- 5'. Width of 4'. [FlorenceÂs pic in todayÂs forum only confirms the height, on the 5Â end of it).

Prairie Harvest: Height of 4'- 5'. Width of 3'.

Prairie Sunrise: Height of 30" to 3'. Width of 3'.

Honeysweet: Height of 3'.

Heritage: Height of 4' to 4Â¼'/ 5Â-7Â. Width of up to 4' .

Lilian Austin: Height of 4' to 4Â¼'. Width of 4'-5'.

Molineux: Height of 2'.

The Herbalist: Height of up to 3'. Width of up to 3'.

Gruss an Aachen: Height of up to 3'. Width of up to 3'.

Europeana: Height of 2'- 3'.

Madame Isaac Pereire: Height of 6'- 8' 2". Width of 4'- 6'. [She was not doing much where I had her, so I moved her this spring. Took off in her new spot. I had forgotten she was a climber (??) - I see that she is a good candidate for pegging, skill I do not possess (yet)].

Souvenir de la Malmaison: Height of 2'- 6'. Width of up to 6'.

Marjorie Fair: Height of 39" to 5'. Width of 3'.

Verdun: Height of 1' to 16".

Comte de Chambord: Height of 3'- 5'. Width of 2'- 4'.

ShailerÂs Provence: Height of 4'-5'.

Daphne: Height of 2- 3'. [Ours is about that height but puts out laterals about the same size if we let it].

Daybreak: Height of 4'. Width of 3'.

Beauty de Rosemawr: Height of 3' to 47". Width of 2' to 35".

Mableton Rouletii: Around 3'.

St Thomas China: ?

Baby Love: Height of 18" to 4' 11". Width of 2' to 39".

Little Buckaroo: Height of 14" to 16".

Carefree Sunshine: Height of 3'. Width of 4'.

Cuthbert Grant: Height 4.9 feet.

Lady Elsie May: Height of 3'.

Morden Fireglow: Height of 2'-4'. Width of 2'-3'.

We know that we will make at least 3 beds (the rugosas will get their own as do not like to get sprayed with fungicide). Before I start marking my lawn for those beds, I thought I'd come to you for that space issue, which of course can be fixed at a later date, but I am trying to start slightly ahead of the curve, if I can.

Lastly, and I would like to stress that this recommendation has not been solicited but we've purchased several roses from Hartwood Roses. While they came home as babies, those have done quite well to the point that I am ready to put some of them in the ground, when I would typically have waited until next year, after wintering them in the garage. Connie is always ready to answer questions and a trip to her garden is a treat (I've done it three times so far).

At any rate, thank you very much for your help with this daunting task.

Caldwell Pink -- 3 x 3 seems like a safe bet.

Carefree Beauty -- mine is new this year. It shot up a new cane that's already 4' long. Hopefully, I gave this one enough room.

Gruss an Aachen -- I have pink Gruss. 3 x 3 should be good.

Mme Isaac Pereire definitely wants to get long. I let her peg herself ... she grows up and arches over on her own.

Verdun is one of my oldest roses. It will easily stay at about 3' high, if you deadhead the whole cluster of flowers once they're finished blooming. It grows mostly vertically, with little spread. This one must be sprayed in order to have any leaves in summer.

Shailer's Provence -- my original Shailer's grows in the front border by the cherry tree, so it gets less sun than it probably should. It wants to be about 5 - 6' tall. My second Shailer's is in the rose field, in full sun, and it's the same height. The difference between the two is that the one in more sun is suckering like crazy. Plan for this.

Mableton Rouletii should stay about 2 x 2. It grows very densely. When it starts blooming in spring, the whole plant is a mass of tiny pink flowers. Wonderful!

St. Thomas China is a bit looser than Mableton Rouletii, but still a compact grower. There was no winter damage on it this year at all, while Single Pink China and Comtesse du Cayla on either side of it were killed to the ground. 3 x 3, maybe if it grows for a couple of years.

Little Buckaroo will fit very nicely with the other mini chinas. The size should be somewhere between Mableton Rouletii and St. Thomas China.

Beauty of Rosemawr ... I'm beginning to doubt the ID on this one. It was sold to me as BoR, but I haven't seen a photo of it online or anywhere else that looks like the one I have. The flowers are stunning, but it's definitely not what BoR looks like on HMF.

Thanks for the endorsement. I have tried really hard to make this a welcoming place, with quality roses and good information. It's nice to see that it's working. Too many other old garden rose nurseries have left us ... I have to hang in there to make sure these roses have a home, and to provide a source for people who want to grow them in their own garden.

Just a few where I'm questioning the figures you have.

SdlM gets some winter damage in z. 7 winters here. I allow only 30" width for this tribe. Maybe it would be bigger with your warmer summers.

Heritage is 6' wide if allowed to fountain. I'd say 4' is a minimum with pruning-up.

Baby Love is around 4' wide here, very dense and solid (unless it gets a catastrophic strain of blackspot).

This is all very exciting!! Robert and I have exchanged emails, and we are definitely on for hosting on Memorial Day. As the date draws nearer, we'll get details together for everyone. I have another commitment on Sunday the 25th, so I'll have to miss the Maryland tour to Olga's and Lori's, etc., this year. I loved it last year, and I encourage anyone who is available that day to take advantage of the opportunity. The best part of these gatherings is the chance to make real friends out of Internet friends. I'll admit, I've heard that sometimes it doesn't work out -- but that's not the case for me. Mid-Atlantic gardeners, how do I prepare my soil pls?

Soil in the DC area is heavy, red clay. Pickering grafts onto multiflora root stock which does well in clay, good choice! You don't need to purchase bagged 'garden soil' at Home Depot but do dig in composted cow manure and top with 2" of shredded bark (either pine or hardwood is fine). If your home is new construction, the soil will be compacted. Dig in the compost (like Michael said, wait for the soil to dry out enough to be workable) then dig in the compost. The level of soil will be higher since you added compost -- that's good, a slightly raised bed helps with drainage. I wouldn't build a raised wooded bed with landscape timbers, your Pickering roses will enjoy the clay.

Here is my experience with your list of roses: Livin' Easy -not resistant w/o spraying here, will defoliate Easy Going-not resistant w/o spraying here, will defoliate Petticoat Fairy Tale - didn't grow this one. Sunsprite -not resistant w/o spraying here, will defoliate Tamora (Austin) - not resistant w/o spraying here, will defoliate Crocus Rose (Austin)- not resistant w/o spraying here, will defoliate Crown Princess Margareta (Austin) - not resistant w/o spraying here, will defoliate Maigold (Kordes) - for climbing - don't know this one Prairie Sunrise (Buck) -not resistant w/o spraying here, will defoliate Winter Sunset (Buck) - better resistance, will keep 30-50% its leaves Prairie Harvest (Buck) -better resistance, will keep 30-50% its leaves Good yellow here is Carefree Sunshine (some BS, but not too much) Crepuscule didn't survive in my garden due to winter dieback Arethusa (china ) is apricot colored, quite resistant and has very little dieback in my garden Quadra is very resistant red climber Aloha Hawaii climber has very decent resistance around here Olga

It's a really long list, the plants that like it in our area. You're quite possibly a whole zone warmer than me, and may have more luck with some roses (Teas - not Hybrid Teas, and Chinas) than I would. I guess I have a different philosophy from other people - plant what likes the conditions you have. This doesn't mean that I don't amend the soil, just that I don't double dig or do anything overly crazy about it. Mostly, my plants are in full sun. Here is a partial list of stuff that's doing fine. Shasta Daisy Becky Dianthus (various) Black eyed susan Geranium Nimbus Various Asiatic/oriental lilies Baptisia (LOVE it!) Peonies/Tree peony Salvia (various) Monarda (various) Boltonia Agastache (various) Aster Ornamental Grasses Kalimeris Gaillardia Yarrow Nepeta Crocosmia Veronicastrum Penstemon Well, you get the idea. Some of these, I am able to grow because I have areas with seriously dry conditions or exceptional drainage because of the terrain, but a lot of these should be easy plants for you. If you want to try an easy to grow Digitalis, try Digitalis Ambigua, a true perennial with yellow flowers. It's quite lovely this time of the year.

Charles Albanel is 2' tall and about 3' wide for me.

My Gruss an Aachen has never been more than 18" x 18". The giant blooms look a bit ridiculous.
