Have you cut down trees for OGR's?

I have a corner lot and the house sits back quite a ways from the street. My east side has many mature pines and magnolias (the previous owner limbed up the magnolias, unfortunately). The pines especially are very tall. I keep debating whether to cut them down or just live with what I have. I do want more room to garden now that my backyard is getting full.

BTW, it will be very expensive to have them cut down!

Have any of you had trees cut down for gardening and growing your roses? Any regrets, comments, encouragement and/or discouragement is appreciated.

I actually had Katrina take out a pretty live oak, cedar and buford holly when two huge pines came crashing down. I then cut down a perfectly good water oak to plan this alle. It is centered on a Japanese maple in the picture and a beautiful live oak behind me in the shot. I have had a stump grinder come out 3 times to get all the roots out of the area. I plan on planting a couple of hybrid musks as focal points beyond the right side of these trident maples. Bloominganne, I say go for it, especially since large pines don't hold up in hurricane force winds and do alot of damage. I am willing Gustav away.

We have many cabbage palms in the swampy areas of our 3 acres. Also there are many water oaks, some live oaks and many pines and a few swamp magnolias.

I suffer for sun here. The main planting areas are near the house and they are somewhat shaded by two very large pines. Next to them is a lone cabbage palm that shades this area too much for my needs.

The other co-owner of the property will not let me cut that palm down. Unfortunately for them, it is succumbing to a strange thing that is slowly killing the tree.....

On the other hand, this person wants the pines down and as soon as we gather the funds it shall be done. But, it will be done in a way that serves the roses.

I have an E Veyrat Hermanos, grafted to fort. This rose shall be pillared onto one of the pines that will be topped and left with a fifteen foot stump. These pines leave a very strong core of "fat wood" that takes a VERY long time to decompose. So I expect the pillars to last.

I have not decided on the rose for the other pine.

To have a tree topped here is quite a bit cheaper then having them completely removed. We were quoted $600 for this work on these two pines and included was another pine that will be taken down completely. It is not healthy.

Cutting Down the Tree to Save the Tree?

There is really no substitute for proper watering and weed control with newly transplanted trees that are experiencing transplant shock. If you want trees in an area and can do nothing to assist them, then it would probably be better to start with bare ground and then heavily seed the desired species. If everything goes perfectly, then you can always thin out the density. If mortality occurs, then you will have a more desirable stocking of trees, albeit at a spacing that may not be ideal. Tree from seed are more adapted to climatic changes, although severe drought can kill most young plants. The root systems of trees can often be in better health than the tops after transplant shock and/or insect/disease attacks. For example, a 5 gallon tulip poplar we purchased at a big garden center had top die-back after its first winter in the midwest. I coppiced the stem and it grew vigorously from a stump sprout. That was in 1989, and the tree is healthy and vigorous today and about 50' tall. Our recent very wet April caused my 10 year old 15' tall tulip tree to have a severe attack of fungal spores on the leaves. This is a somewhat off-site planting location with wet soils nearby from a downspout being rerouted to the yard instead of the street and also little air movement below 30' of height. The site was more normal when the downspout drained to the street several years ago. Most of the leaves on the tree turned black/died. Most of the stem and roots on the tree are still alive. I may coppice the stem this winter, if necessary, to get a healthy single stem. In the 9 previous normal years, there was only minimal fungal damage on this tree. If coppicing fails, then I will probably plant a 5 gallon baldcypress. Obviously, the right tree for the site conditions is very important and I am fighting mother nature with this experiment.

Ken is right. The cost of having a tree removed is all over the place, and depends a great deal on where you live, how close to the house (or neighbors) the tree is, ease of removal, etc. We had some local yahoos remove some trees in the back for a very good price. They left a total mess of the backyard...ruts, dead grass, small limbs stuck in dirt, etc. We bit the bullet to pay more for a better company when we need trees removed from the front yard removal --- and they did a great job! They kept the grass nice - no tire tracks, divots, damage to the house, etc. They laid down plywood on the grass on which they drove their bobcat to remove the wood. I guess it all depends on the type of service that you want/need. Also, get an estimate for removal of the stump at the same time. You'll pay more for removal of the tree wood, and stump chips. If you want to save the tree wood for your fireplace, then let them know. I think Sparky might be a lab/dobie mix. I was told he was a lab/rott mix by the pet_ rescue but he is long and lean. I am working on a Facebook for him at Renee's insistence. She and her coworkers love to hear about his antics.

Clint, Thanks for the info & photo. I like what you're doing there with the alle. I hope Gustav stays away too but the NWS keeps showing it making a beeline towards New Orleans. I hope it hangs a left.

thornotorose, I have seen some nice gardens made with the stumps right here on GW. I asked my husband about it and he voted no but he doesn't have much imagination. It's a lot cheaper too. I have been quoted $1,000 per tree to have them removed and the stumps ground. I have more than 10 that need removing.

If they weren't on the East side of the house I would probably not be so motivated to take them out but they are taking up some prime realestate for roses.

I do worry in strong winds I could have a huge disaster on my hands if those tall pines start falling.

Can you takeout a few in the Southeast end, which would give you the most light fastest and then thin out the weaker ones from the remaining trees? From which direction are your prevailing winds? How useful are the trees as a windbreak versus the risks of them falling? Other functions the trees serve: wildlife, cooling, privacy, noise reduction...

Take it slowly. It takes a long time to grow a tree.
