When should I move Crepuscule?

I planted a Crepuscule plant beside our stairs in 2006, it did nothing for two, three years before finally starting to go upward. It's now quite large but not very thick, a climber, as it should be. I had wanted to do it as a freestanding shrub but it just does not want to do that and I'm afraid to prune it that much. It only has one giant cane that the whole plant stems from now, about 9 feet tall, all whips basically. It's almost a bit too shady there and, well my experiment with it did not do so great and I'd like to move it to a sunnier spot where it can really really fill in and be a much better plant.

When's a good time to dig it up? I know Crepuscule is reknowned for disliking being moved correct? I don't want to shock it. I suppose in the next few weeks?

Any advice on how to proceed moving it, especially because it's relatively big up top (single cane at the bottom).

I don't know 'Crepuscule's reputation as being difficult to move, but I moved mine twice in its early years and it didn't seem bothered about it. In my climate I would transplant a rose or shrub in mid- or late autumn, once the heat was gone and the plant had gone dormant, or as dormant as it would be likely to be, but before snow, frozen ground, and other unpleasantnesses of winter. I try to plant everything before Christmas, to give the plants the winter to get established before drought the following summer. However, your colder climate and different kind of summer may require a different planting schedule, and I'd like to hear what other zone 5 or 6 gardeners have to say on the subject: would shifting 'Crepuscule' in fall render it particularly susceptible to freezing to death in winter?

I will not miss the heliconias I planted which throw up new plants but never flower, or the pine cone ginger that takes over every summer but leaves a bare spot where nithing else will grow in the winter. Oh, contraire!! I used my kitchen for weeks before my hardware was installed. The drilling for holes and install didn't make that much mess. For the most part, I just moved a couple of things in the drawer and wiped. It only took a few minutes, but was worth being able to put all my junk away. Course, I had working plumbing, range hood, and MW though so the kitchen was completely usable otherwise. After plumbing, I think I'd do hardware next then range hood. Fridge water line, trim work, and open shelving can wait. I'm sorry the end is dragging on so slowly for you! How frustrating!

Great minds think alike! I also planted VQ to co-mingle a bit with my ND. :) I think the difference in colour and bloom form is just enough to keep it interesting. Regarding transplanting now vs. waiting, I would let it finish its flush and then move it if it's an established plant. However, your cool temps would be perfect if it's fairly young. I'm also a newbie to general rose growing, but have had 75yr old ND for years and have now transplanted them multiple times, most recently this Spring. With the help of everyone on this forum it was very successful. I got as much root ball as possible and dragged them on a tarp to their new location, having already dug and amended the new (huge) hole. I water in after adding ~half the soil and again at the end. I also make a little berm around it to keep the water from flowing off. Lots of compost, but no fertilizer. I watered well until established. Two of the transplants didn't miss a beat, and the other lost its first set of leaves to shock, but

I have a washing machine in my kitchen area and HATE IT! I see in your option 3 you have the stacked washer and dryer in your eating nook. In my household there are always laundry baskets that have to be stored somewhere (which takes up space in an already small kitchen). Just something to think about. Also, is there a reason you need a bathtub on the main floor? If you could get rid of it you'd have alot more space because you wouldn't need such a huge bathroom.

yep, in agreement with Melissa - to get them up and moved while there is still warmth in the ground but before the winter sets in hard. I am also thinking that you could lose a LOT of the top growth and encourage more basal growth next year - there are a number of ways to do that, so don't be hesitant about cutting it back hard. Mine has always grown with many small canes from the start, looking rather more like a multiflora rambler than a climber, so I think it is in the plants DNA to respond very differently to climate and position. I see no reason why yours should not grow away once it gets its roots into the soil. All the normal rules apply - keeping the rootball as big and undisturbed as possible, having a new hole ready, lots of water and so on.
