You are correct about grafting increasing a rose's ability to thrive in places where it might not do as well own-root. One problem with this is if the rose dies to the ground, the graft may die and you won't get the same rose the next spring - you'll get the graft plant instead.

There are 2 reasons why growers are going back to own-root roses. Well, 3 really, if you count the above problem. The main reason, in my opinion, is that there just are not enough people who know how to do grafting left to do it on the large scale growers need. Grafting is really hard work when you're working on a production field scale. I doubt growers can afford to pay what it would cost to get people to do it anymore.

The third reason may be the rose mosaic virus. While it does not seem to be passed easily from plant to plant in the garden (maybe yes, maybe no from pruners), it definitely can be passed via grafting.

I like to think growers are finally taking notice that rosarians are really upset about the spread of RMV, but I doubt it. More likely is the second reason - it hits them in the wallet, where they pay attention.

This is and always will be the eternal debate. Everyone has different growing conditions so what I think is great might prove to be a dog for you. I think a lot of northern growers like own root better because our roses can and often do die back to the ground in the winter. With own root roses you don't have to worry about losing the graft and ending up with root stock instead of your chosen variety. Own root roses are slower to mature, that's true, but they do catch up eventually. And yes, there are some varieties that are terrible on their own roots. They are just such weak growers on their own but do fine when grafted to a stronger growing root stock. I've found though that those roses don't tend to winter very well for me anyway and soon die. In places like Florida own root roses don't succeed because of the nematodes in the soil so they have to have grafted roses. But then they don't have as great a problem with wintering. That's why you see varieties offered both own root and grafted. And the choice of which root stock is another big debate, Dr. Huey, Manetti, R. Mutliflora or Fortuniana (and there are others). They all have different characteristics that make them good for one place and maybe not for another. That's why it's a good idea to talk to other rose growers in your area and see what they like and does well for your area. Or experiment with the different ones yourself and see what you like! I have heard several people in cold zones say that once they get Fortuniana roses through their first winter they grow great even though it's thought to be a warm zone root stock.

I'm currently trying Multiflora and Huey grafts on some, and own-root versions of others to see how well they do. Most susceptible to winter kill are the minis, which are all own-root and not nearly as large as their big sisters at the end of their first year. So far, so good; no minis lost to winter kill. That seems to bode well for some of the own-root hybrid teas that I ordered, I'd think.

Flaura, I've found just the opposite. The minis do great over winter. They're the toughest little guys I ever saw! I've had some die back completely to the ground and spring back as big as ever. With HT's it can depend on the variety. Some were just not bred to be own root and are not vigorous enough on their own roots to do well.

You're right---I misspoke. I should say that the mini's appear to me to be the most susceptible because of their size after 1 year of growth. To correct my previous statement, I fret the most during December to March about my minis, because I can see that they have died back all the way to the ground and I'm probably freaking out a little bit. :)

Re-reading this thread, I see I mis-understood your question and gave you a non-answer - sorry about that! I thought you were asking why own-roots are on the rise again, not which is the better way to go. For me, it depends on the kind of rose. Hybrid teas do better grafted in my area, while shrubs and Austins do better own-root. The understock of choice for me is Dr. Huey - multiflora is too vigorous and will sucker like mad.

As others have said, your mileage may vary.
