And if I lived someplace where there was a WINTER, I would be going for 'Mel Hulse,' 'Fara Shimbo,' and "Fa's Marbled Moss.'

RVR also offers some other hard-to-finds, among them "Secret Garden Musk Climber."

'Mel Hulse' is a completely modern variety with no OGR in it and is entirely suitable for your climate. Mel grows it at his house and the Heritage and it is one of his best performers there. No Winter required.

Paul, I've never managed to grow a Moss here without masses of mildew. What do you think?
Alkaline soil, lots of mildew, little rain, alkaline water, no winter chill . . .

Its true; Mosses = mildew in many climates where its foggy and there are humid, cool nights. 'Mel Hulse' is much better than most Mosses at resisting Mildew, but there's no guarantee it would fare well where you are.

In general, I avoid those classes -- my philosophy being that I will enjoy the roses that DO live happily here, and avoid the ones that make me tear out my hair. :-)

We are what you might call on the extreme edge of mild. Our "native flora" is basically prickley pear and sycamore trees, and our groundwater tastes like something you should not ingest.

No rose could mildew worse than 'Charles de Mills,' or maybe 'Indigo.'

"Chuck" is a mildewer no matter where you grow it, in my experience, unless it has perfect air movement and regular washings with water. Don't get me wrong, I love 'Charles de Mills', but its often a mess by late June.

From our experience, "Chuck" met an old description I read:
"The color of the blooms is set off well by the soft gray color of the mildew."

BTW, 'Jeri Jennings' is growing apace, and turning into a very graceful plant. Seems to be setting herself up for a nice fall bloom.

It wouldn't tell you a lot. My plant went from pot to ground in Jan., and is still reasonably immature.
I don't really expect a rose to put out a lot of bloom while it is going through a major period of growth,
as this one has done over the past few months.

It's setting buds now, and I expect a nice fall flush.
I think I'll see much more bloom by spring and, with maturity, more summer bloom.

It's put up several vigorous basals in the past couple of months, and is beginning to arch.
I expect it to reach the "arching 5-6 feet" it's billed to achieve.
In the meantime, it is well-clothed with very clean, very dark green foliage. That's a BIG deal in my climate!

Thanks Jeri, that is very helpful to me as I need to figure out who I'll yank out to put Jeri in place. I wonder what she'll look like in a container, I have a 24" burgundy pot and I want something that's arching in there. Abe Darby currently lives in that pot but I think I might want to move him.
