My Ballerina and Veilchenblau have clusters of small hips like that and almost no thorns. Robinhood too, but it's a bit thorny. Ballerina's have been very pretty. Firm shiney round hips, nice color. The local wild rose makes nice sprays (good color) but they're airier (hips further apart). I don't know what would grow in MI, though.

Thanks everyone for the information! You all have been really helpful! I planted a star jasmine at another home, and I do remember that being a nice plant. There is a family-owned nursery less than a mile from my house. They are really great with plants that do well only in this area. I will definitely talk to them!! They don't seem to carry very many varieties of roses. (There is another larger family-owned nursery across town that has a great website that I have visited. ) That's why I posted to this forum. Obviously, I don't have much experience with roses!! Basically knock-out roses is all I have, and do well wherever!! Harrborrose -- I'm a bit confused about my zone. To register for this site, I googled "find my garden zone" and went to garden.org and entered my zip code. It says my zone is 7B. The map looks to change right near my area. Thanks everyone! I have previously heavily relied on 3 books that I have for DFW gardening. But was just hoping that something different would work. Sounds like this is not the place for that!!

I'll try to help but let me know if what I say is not clear. Every thing you said about your rose in year one sounds correct for Eureka. Yes, it would bloom in the first year. It did not bloom in year 2 because the top part of your rose died. Now all that is left is the root stock Dr. Huey. Dr. Huey is a once blooming rose and does not usually do well up here depending on your soil. Yes, that shoot growing out a ways from the main cane is a sucker. Dr. Heuy only blooms on old wood. So if you wish for blooms from it do not cut it down at all and it will bloom next year probably in June. Where we live we must protect the graft in winter or the graft will freeze killing the rose we bought. One way to do this is to bury it (the graft) at least 4 inches under the soil. In the older days you would people with chicken wire in a circle around the rose then packed with leaves to keep it from freezing. I think that is what rose cones where used for but I'm not sure. There are some problems with both ways. I don't need to worry about it thou because Dr. Huey hates my soil and never returns or send up a suckers. I only plant own root roses and occasionally those with multiflora root stock. If you have any more questions just ask and I'll help if I can.
