Experts here will surely give you your answer, but I want to tell you that I had similar growth on a rosebush that caught spray drift on a breezy day from that Round-Up weed killer. You say you did not use it, but are you sure that no neighbors or gardeners used this product, even at some distance?

If it's RRD it's caused by a virus passed along by a microscopic mite that is already present on the canes. I very much doubt the tea will do anything at all for the rose if it's now infected.

Sooner or later anntn6b will be directed to this post and she'll be a world of help. I'm no expert, but it does look to me as though it could be RRD. It could also be herbicide damage, although only one out of hedge getting damage from herbicide spray drift seems the less likely possibility without knowing more about the neighbors and how closely the roses are planted to each other.

I know one recommendation Ann is sure to make is that you figure out which way the wind blows around that rose, and then look into the prevailing wind and examine the wild roses you see in that direction to see if any of them show symptoms. That you have already had to remove a rose due to RRD also is indicative that this may well be RRD.

If you determine it is RRD, removing just the infected plant should be enough. Watch the others closely though to make sure they weren't infected also. The sooner you remove it, the better chance the others will have.
Take a sample to your county extension agent asap for a positive ID.

I think it is RRD. Do use a straight shovel to cut off any roots from it that might be reaching out to other roses...if they have grafted to an adjacent rose's roots, that rose is in danger.

Not all county extension agents are up to speed on RRD, nor are their support people at the respective states.

Southern California problems aren't southeastern US problems; for that SCal rose growers should be very thankful.

The just pour on fertilizer suggestions are not applicable to contageous, incurable diseases. But this is a free country and anyone can give advice.

Re the picture, it's not just the leaves that are wrong, it's the spacing of the leaves on the stems. The short internodal distances are what are also wrong and what make them looked so bunched up...thus the rosette part of the RRD name. Also, I'm seeing a great lack of symmetry on someof the leaves as well as textural problems.
Try to get this dug out before the weather gets hot again and try to get all the roots. That is really horrific vigorous growth.

Ann is our expert, but it looks like RRD to me. I would remove it immediately and bag or burn the top growth.

Thank you Ann. I really thought this was RRD but just wanted another opinion.I will have my husband help me dig this up and try and get all the roots if possible and burn it. We have so many wild roses growing around me so I am not surprised, and will be on the lookout for my other roses. I may have had this on my Hawkeye Belle that I dug up and burned. It had strange texture on the leaves and looked very diseased. This rose never had any disease before so did not want to take any chances.
