I don't know for sure because I've never grown the rose but I would cover any bets on the following:

Spring Hill is not a reliable source for information. They tend to rate every rose they sell as hardy to zone 3 and that's nonsence.

Orange Velvet is essentially a climbing Hybrid Tea. It isn't especially difficult to keep such roses alive over a zone 5 winter; it's very difficult to preserve enough cane length to get anything approaching decent bloom performance in zone 5.

Thanks for the info mike. I've grown some roses before but never a climbing Hybrid Tea. I'm sorry to say I don"t have much experience with growing them. Maybe I picked a bad one to learn on. Are all climbers difficult to winter over in z 5? What can I do to help preserve as much of the canes as possible. I also planted a Golden Shower, a Zeppherine Druan,and Climbing Blaze. thanks....marymac

I live in zone 5 and gave up on climbers and hybrid teas. They just aren't reliably hardy here. Of course, I am too lazy to do a lot of winter protection. I plan on putting in a few climbers next year, but I am going to choose canadian explorer types, like John Davis, or Henry Kelsey. WIth regular climbers in cold areas, the recommended protection is to take the canes off the support, and cover them. Too much work for me, but I am the original lazy gardener. Aside from climbers, I switched to canadian roses and rugosas and I never do any winter protection. The only other non-canadian types I grow are the polyantha fairy roses. They are my favorites, covered in bloom, no winter protecting, and they grow like crazy. They are also easy to propagate. If they had fragrance, they'd be perfect. Living in the colder, northern states makes growing some roses more challenging. I envy those southern rose gardens, but then again, here in the north, we have lilacs and tulips, which need colder temps and don't do too well down south. I guess each area has its advantages.

Well I guess I will have a challenge this winter to see if I can keep my climbers . I drive around and see some great looking climbers here and there, but maybe they do what you say. I'll just hope for the best.
