Still Have Not Heard from Vintage

I am getting a little anxious about not hearing from Vintage. I wasn't expecting to get anything, but I did not receive the "I'm sorry" email. Should I email them or give them a call to check? I don't want to be a bother, but I would like to know what roses I should or should not expect from them so that I may complete my fall order.

Josh, got my list of roses on Monday. I bet you will get yours soon - I understand they are swamped. Since you didnt get "the letter", you probably will get some of what you wanted. I got less than half of what I listed, but I listed 25 and got 10. I was a bit disappointed about not getting a few I really wanted, but got some I did - and I am sure that whoever gets these probably didnt get all they wanted either. I am happy to have something from Vintage to remember them by, and am happy they are selling well and will go out on a high note. Hope you get what you want - post a list when you get it.

I just got an email today. I ordered four roses with four alternatives. I'm getting three of my alternatives.

Great news! Final chances! I just bookmarked this thread. I've been waffling about whether to order any more roses again, ever.... considering the news about Rose Rosette Disease. But I've decided that all the spraying, around here, for West Nile Hoax, will at least delay the spread of the vectoring mites. So, while our air is probably deadly to Humans, it may be quite salubrious for roses. I feel so bad about not having been a Vintage customer. But I've been a loyal customer to Roses of Yesterday and Today, since my teens, and of Antique Rose Emporium since their first catalogue. Somehow, my fruitless internet searches for Rosa Gigantea never brought up Vintage (who apparently had it, all along, plus various hybrids thereof). Why didn't their existence come to my attention? Anyway, it's nice to know there are final chances to order. These people truly are HEROES OF THE ROSE WORLD.

Alana, According to some recent scientific research analyzing roses' "volatile" components, this rose does not appear to be even related to the chinas. Thus not only can it not be a china, it can't be a bourbon either (as they are part china). Sophies Perpetual seems to be of European descent and is now thought to descend from R. damascena. So SP may be better classified as a damask perpetual. I'm posting a link to the references page on Help Me Find which includes the article, "Volatile Components in Chinese Roses", Acta Hort 751, ISHS 2007, p. 401-6 (by Sasaki, Ueda, Wang, Watanabe, and Yomogida) which has this text: "...some cultivars...did not emit these components [charactertic of Chinas] and 'Sophie's Perpetual', belonging to the China group, emitted beta-phenylethy alcohol and Nerol which R. damascena Miller also emitted...These cultivars might have no relation to Chinese roses and likely derived from European ancient species such as R. damascena." The results appeared to be somewhat of a surprise, and it seems vendors haven't updated their classification of this rose which would reflect the new research. From reading more on the HMF references page, the assumption it was a china came in part from its perpetual flowering habit. However, the damask perpetual Stanwell Perpetual also has rapid repeat as well as a heavy scent not characteristic of chinas. I'm still here too! lol. I just haven't had the time i wish i had to check in as often as i would like. When i got back from El Salvador, I had a week to relax before the beginning of the fall semester. Then after two weeks of school, I lost my doggie to an infection in the spinal chord :( and that was really hard on me. I didn't tend the yard for over about months(the grass was halfway up my calves, weeds were growing rampant, hedges were way out of shape... I finally gathered myself and am now spending time bringing the yard back from neglect on the weekends. I promise i will be here more often.

Before I received my order from them, they sent me an email asking how my weather was and when I would like the order shipped. I told them that they could ship right away and I received the order approximately 1 week later. I would give it another week since you originally told them May 7th was your frost free date. I imagine they are probably very busy shipping orders right now and will get yours shipped as soon as they can. Linda

I heard late last night...only 1 of my 4 could be fulfilled. Congratulations to those of you who are having better luck :D

Quite sad that the gallon sale is postponed from the 1st to the 15th (I was really hoping that the timing would work that if this sort of thing happened I could snag something else before having to decide if I really want to pay shipping on just 1).

Actually I just heard this morning. I had not expected to get more than one or two because I was a little late (2 hours) in sending in my order. As it turns out I got "the letter". I was surprised, because I thought that all the people who got none of their choices had already been informed at least a week ago. Too bad for me -- I had been scouting out potential places to plant some of them.

So if you haven't heard anything yet, you still might not be getting roses. The suspense lingers, but not for me anymore.

I'm with you, Rosefolly - we didn't get back into town from vacation till that Sunday EVENING, for heaven's sake, so I was many hours late in ordering. I ordered a request of 16 with 10 alternates, and if I don't get "the letter" I doubt I'd get more than one or two of what I'd listed. Probably Exploit/Colonia, since it was still on their "for sale" list beforehand and not one of a kind, but I really shouldn't be planting many bands anyway in my zone. I'm happy for the early birds who got their orders, and happy that the closeout process has been as active as it has been for the sake of the business, at least as happy as we can be with the sad closing of Vintage.

Actually, since I did not get any of the Vintage offerings, I am buying the rambler 'Emily Gray', which I saw growing this summer on the outer fence of Mr. Quest-Ritson's garden. (No, I was not his visitor. I saw it as I walked by and was impressed.) I'm on a waiting list for a replacement of my defunct 'Souvenir de Pierre Notting'. Finally I have three of the roses Vintage imported from Europe coming this fall.

With all of these riches awaiting me, I am truly a most fortunate gardener.

Well it turns out even with my late order, I was able to get 7 of the 36 roses I'd listed as preferred or alternates. I figured I'd better keep the list long, being so late. True, none of these were the OGRs that you early birds snapped up, but I have 6 HTs and one large flowered climber coming. Now I have to plan a campaign of extra TLC to keep these babies alive through our zone 5 winter. At least we just got a lovely 1.5 inches of rain (after virtually none in July), which will set the stage well, and our first frost can be delayed as late as early November in some years.

Bidding a sad Vintage farewell...
