Queen of Sweden keeps its color?

Hello, I'm relatively new to roses but I've had great success in my first year growing The Generous Gardener and Wollerton Old Hall. I'm now addicted and planning for next year...

The only part I didn't like about TGG was that the very pale pink faded to white in the sun almost immediately. I do have her in a very sunny spot but still. It's basically a white rose for me.

I'd like to add a bit more pink. I love the bloom shape on Queen of Sweden - but I'm worried there will be the same color issue. Does anyone have QOS experience in terms of holding her color a little better? I know some fading is inevitable I just wish it was after the bloom fully opened at least! Maybe I should try a darker pink?

Hi Maggie,

I have about 100 Queen of Sweden bushes in a hedge around my lawn. They were planted bare-root in January 2013 and are now well-established plants about 1.5 metres (5 feet) tall. My observation is that the fading - even in the middle of Summer - is minimal. This year the first flowers appeared on the hedge before the end of April - it was glorious through mid-May and, after a few weeks to regather its resources, it is now in full bloom again. The photo was taken about half an hour ago Ã¢ÂÂ¦ hope it gives you some indication!

Tricia, wow. Your hedge is simply gorgeous. But how did you dig 100 planting holes? Just wondering. I consider digging one hole a major project.

Long time no see Morden Man (and it shouldn't be so long). I appreciate your comments on this rose including taking the time to post those wonderful pictures. Even if Queen of Sweden has a few prickles, compared to my Tamora it will be considered thornless by me (grin)......I just noticed last night while looking over the Roses Unlimited catalog that they carry Queen of Sweden. With a container rose (which is what I'm planning for this one) I definitely learn towards own root, so that could work out well if the rose is vigorous enough...I know DA likes to plant his roses in multiples, but I never cared for that for a number of reasons, one being increased disease problems in our hot humid climate where air circulation is so important. But if this is a healthy rose then that problem might be lessened somewhat.....And Kate, what you said about subtle pastel colors blahing out from a distance holds true here also. Those pastels can really glow in climates like the PNW or England where the sunlight is of a more gentle sort and often partially obscured by clouds. Up close and personal via a container on a walkway or entryway is a way to appreciate some of these subtle beauties......Now I just have to figure where I can possibly put two other roses since RU has a 3 rose minimum....Thanks to everyone for thier experiences.........Maryl

I was looking up Windermere in Austin's catalog: "A particularly free-flowering variety that flowers very late in the season. It produces many basal shoots with few thorns. Fruity fragrance with hint of citrus." I love its creme color. Marina: how do you fertilize your Windermere for it to be so loaded? Many thanks. The rose park nearby fertilizes with chemicals, and I usually see the most is 10 blossoms per bushy Austin. You also have Heather Austin, which David Austin mentioned about its stamens smell like cloves. Is that a pleasant smell? I like Christopher Marlowe's citrus smell, but its fleeting fragrance lasts only one day. I'm addicted to Mary Magdalene's myrrh and tea smell, it reminds me of the Catholic church's incense. My hubby just got six crystal flower vases for free, I'm getting ideas from you for flower arrangments. Many thanks for your post pics.

Ann, THANK YOU!!! I think you've hit the nail on the head. There's one pic on the page before the last that shows three flowers in different stages with one blown open like my first pics. Even the leaves have the red ribbing. I think it IS AB. There's not much on GW about it, so I'll do some more sleuthing. Is this one still sold as AB, do you know? This is thrilling. It's such a pretty flower, I'm surprised it's so little grown and not much info on it. I like that it's meant to stay small, now just to see if it looks good next to Dark Desire and New Dawn. I had wanted a VERY light blush there, such as First Crush or Bolero, or a soft pink such as Earth angel or Gruss an Aachen. On the parallel side I wanted something in the same colour as Viking Queen and was thinking of Pretty Jessica. Hmmm. I also have space in the bed with VQ, CL. Falstaff, Heathcliff and Sugar Moon with only morning sun. The next bed I'm planting in the spring will have a climbing pink rose, TessOTD and as yet undetermined. I'll have to look at my old pics and see how it might look with those colours. The flower is still identical and now lasting days with fragrance in our now cold weather. It can take freezing. As shown above in the last two pics it has an almost golden glow with stamens showing and inner petals recurving towards them. Is that a "button eye"? There is the definite quartering in this flower unlike the first ones.

Chris: Queen of Sweden WANTS to be pruned. She doesn't want to be pegged or trained laterally. She has upright posture and would not deign to flop over a roof. I have two hedges of Queen of Sweden and several more scattered throughout my gardens because she roots easily and is a great rose to fill in narrow spaces. I deadhead mine every week and prune once a month. And she rewards me with a continuous bloom. If you don't want to prune you will have, as someone else said, sky pencils. But she is easy to cut back and this task of love should only take a couple minutes. I don't think it's a matter at all of forcing a plant to fit a spot. Some roses just require pruning to look their best. Best wishes!

Hi view1ny - digging 100 planting holes is definitely beyond my capacity, too. We have really heavy clay soil here so I did it the easy way Ã¢ÂÂ¦. I phoned my local nursery;-)

They arrived late October with one of those trench digging machines to dig out all the soil down to a depth of about 50cms - they then amended the soil with a truckload of much better soil, lots of well rotted horse manure and 'cornunghia' which, I believe, is probably a product we call 'hoof and horn' in English. It then sat and waited until January when the bare-root QofS were planted. Every single bush is thriving so their soil preparation was obviously successful.

Wow! And I thought I was lucky to have three Queens of Sweden. 100--I can't even visualize it, but I sure wish I lived close enough to visit your yard and observe for myself. That is pretty heady stuff there. And QofS is a winner, isn't she!]

QoS sort of keeps its colour in my Med climate sun and heat. What I mean to say is that it doesn't fade before it opens up completely. Having said that you might want to try something darker also. Boscobel stays is a medium pink in the heat for me and has similar growth habit in my climate. In cooler conditions it gets salmony tones.
