sure, move it. Every grafted bare-root was pruned prior to storage and sale. You don't need to prune much if you transplant during dormancy and defoliate it.

I grow all three roses, and think that you must move SDLM.

G Nabonnand and Duchesse become quite large. SDLM remains rather small in comparison.

I like to plant SDLM in groups of three for a "dramatic" effect. I have done this four times around my yard. THe largest are about 5 feet tall, and have closed in to look like one large rose. One other is almost as tall (one group). The group by the mailbox has remained small, possibly because of the concrete in the street and sidewalk, and the last group is young.

In other words, why not order two more to go with the one you move?

You are 4 hours south of us, so I don't know what success you have in moving roses in the fall. I did not have much luck, and think mine did better by moving them in the early spring --- like the first of March. (I live in Tulsa).

What you really need is SDLM plus two of her sports, planted in a group. Allow me to sugest Konprincessen Victoria and Mme. Cornelisson. Or Captaine Dyville, should you be so lucky as to be able to source it.

S de St. Anne is of such transcendent beauty that I think it should be planted alone.

I love SDLM more than almost any of my roses. However in my garden the larger roses diminish it because I have mostly larger roses. A collection of three gives SDLM the drama that my larger roses have.

Kronprincessin for about the third time does not like my garden. It is beside the collection of SDLM, and is weak. Also is Souvenir de St. Anne. I have another of her in a "Buck" bed where she looks good. Her bloom form does not seem to match the SDLM.

Michael has recommended Mystic Beauty for years, but when it comes time to order, I opt to go to ARE rather than Roses Unlimited because of the expense. I would like to find other roses to grow with SDLM, but right now she overwhelms the others.

In the back I have another collection of 3 SDLM and right behind them is Bubble Bath, a hybrid musk. THat is a very nice combination. THen all around them I have larger roses.

My G Nabonnand roses and Duchesse are all free standing, but beside others in the back.

I think that in another garden that would grow KV a collection of Kronprincessin or St. Annes would be pretty. I also would put Maggie with SDLM since they have the same type of bloom.

Sammy, you are just having bad luck with Kronprinzessin Viktoria. She is just as vigorous and easy as any of the SdlM family, and the most resistant to petal blight and balling. Mine grew to 30" x 30" in about two seasons from a 1-gal RU plant. Now she is 4' wide and keeps trying to eat Prospero. Maybe you should try moving her. Similarly, my Capt. Dyel is puny, but after seeing Kaye's pictures, I'm sure it's because something is wrong with his spot.

Thanks for ideas on this. Believe I'll wait until dormant season to move, and may buy two more. Any time anyone visits my garden, they want cuttings of this rose.

I am looking for five of the most fragrant roses. Have bought many roses, thinking they would have a wonderful fragrant, and they do not. (Suggestion please)

Donna, what state do you live in? Zone 8 could be Oregon or Georgia.

Also, are you willing to spray fungicide?

Are you looking for roses shaped like florist roses, or do you like the old-fashioned look?

Donna, I suggest you start a new thread titled "very fragrant roses for Texas" so more people will answer. Probably 'Maggie' and 'Souvenir de la Malmaison' will be mentioned. You should check out Chamblees Roses and the Antique Rose Emporium for vendors. They don't ship in the heat of summer.

Belinda's Dream*
Souvenir de la Malmaison*
Buff Beauty
Charles de Mills (though he's crazy with the runners, so think twice before you plant him)

The two with the asterisks are, imho, two of the best roses IN THE WHOLE WORLD. Seriously, they're fantastic. Free-blooming, vigorous, disease resistant, gorgeous, fragrant, attractive shrub form, low maintenance. Start with BD or S de la M and you can't go wrong. Good luck!

A very fragrant rose is Deuil de Dr. Reynaud. I had doubts about it doing well in my hot garden but the leaves are impeccable, not brown like some of my other roses. The blooms don't last long in the heat but they are really perfumed. Austin's Bishop's Castle is very fragrant and is doing well here in the heat. I second Souvenir de la Malmaison and Belinda's Rose for all-around beauty, fragrance and wealth of bloom.

You might get a little setback on the first year, but just set yourself a challenge of digging the best hole that any rose ever had and maybe the rose will be happier than before. My Souv. M. moved 3 times. Each time to a better location. I finally had the good sense to give it a big spot and not make it compete with other roses. Every year it gets bigger.

Where did you acquire Deuil de Dr. Reynaud?
I didn't see it at the Antique Rose Emporium.
