what's wrong with Therese Bugnet?

Over the past few weeks, I've noticed some changes with her. There are some buds coming in (the first bloom was gorgeous in June) and I fertilized with an organic granule about 3 weeks ago.

The twisted new growth has powdery mildew disease, which you should look up. You can control it by hosing down the foliage occasionally at a time when it will dry quickly and applying an organic fungicide such as oil, sulfur, or Cornell mixture. See the FAQ on the Organic Roses Forum.

The large brown areas appear to be some type of spray burn. Have you applied anything to the foliage?

The round brown spots could be spot anthracnose disease, to which Therese is susceptible. It spreads in cool weather with rain, but you may not need to do anything about it. TB is a tough rose.

Thank you, michaelg! I have not applied anything at all besides the organic fertilizer, which I mixed into the soil. Of course, something could have blown over from the neigbors, although I haven't noticed anything with my other plants and rose shrubs.

I will try the organic fungicide. Is it applied immediately after I hose the foliage, or after it has dried? I will take a look at the FAQs as well.

I agree about the foliage -it is not at all typical of rugosas, as it is softer, and a lighter green. This was one of my first roses, from Wayside back in the late 80's. It was planted in the wrong place, and I planted it too deep. The wrong place, because it was not only a rocky poor soil spot, but too far from the house to enjoy. But the too deep worked in its favor - about 12 years ago it suckered out a baby, which I gave to a friend. The rose survived a rose cane borer attack in 2000 that knocked out most of my rugosa hybrids, but except for cutting back the dead stuff I ignored it. No fertilizer, nothing. After my husband's death 8 years ago, I totally neglected that end of the yard. Finally getting around to cutting out the weeds and white pine seedlings spring 08, I discovered not just the original, but a second one, growing just a foot away. I used a sharp spade to separate them, potted them each up in big pots (huge root systems on each of them) cut them back to about 18", and moved them up to the house, on the deck where I could water them. They took off. Last year they were put into the new rose garden, on either side of the stone path up to the house.

I, too, am a Therese Bugnet fan. She has been blooming non-stop in my garden since she started in spring. As Robert mentioned spring flush was the most magnificent, but I have been amazed that there have been constant blooms on her. The fragrance is divine, but I only notice it when the blooms first open. I am going to have to prune her back soon as she is already 6 feet tall and still growing. Such a vigorous rose. Olga, my experience so far has been no diseases on TB (I have 2), but its leaves are a welcome snack for some parassites (don't ask me for the english name, look in google under the latin name, Arge pagana). TB grows as big as Rosereie, and nearly as big as Scabrosa, but R and S are superior in reblooming and parfume. So I'd suggest you R or S rather than TB. Like TB no disease, but conrary to TB their leaves are no snack for anyone. I have 5 R and 4 S vs. 2 TB: this reflects also my relative evaluation: TB is no bad, but could be better. I'm not sure what's up with your Theresa Bugnet rose, though good soil and adequate moisture would help to induce further flowering. Mine continues to bloom on new wood, though nothing spectacular after the spring flush ... otherwise, this is a favorite of mine! Terry

What Michael said: you appear to have both Mildew and Anthracnose; treat with Sulfur and hose the plant off with plain water several times a week at a time of day when the plant will dry quickly. Sulfur applied after hosing the plant and a thorough drying.
