Comments (3)These aren't my containers as they don't look so good right now. They're like me,the heat has gotten to them.BUT here's some pictures from the garden of things that are surviving. Guess this classifies as a container,it's a pond and holds water and plants.LOL SEDUMS And the morning glories: Enjoy the view. Kathi...See MoreIs My Mums Dead?
Comments (4)I wouldn't give up on them so soon considering the extraordinarily harsh winter that is finally (grudgingly) loosening its grip. According to my garden notes, this year we're nearly 6 weeks behind where the garden was in 2012. I have new growth on many perennials but much later than I've seen in recent years. If the plants were well established and protected from extreme conditions by a sizeable blanket of snow cover, chances are most will survive whatever Ma Nature throws at them. Gardening (hopefully) teaches patience. Give them more time....See MoreShould I give up on my mums?
Comments (6)Around here at least, mums are notorious for their late start so I think it might be a bit early to say if they're dead or not. They could be, but even a small sprout can grow into something worthwhile if you give it a chance. Some of mine are up a bit, but others look totally dead until you gently scratch around the base of the plant. Look carefully for even the smallest sign of life. With that said, I think it was a bad winter for mums. Or maybe I should said it was a bad fall for mums with the drought and all that. I should have watered more, but I didn't and that really can affect a plants ability to make it through the winter. Kevin...See MoreHelp with my new mums (deadheading)
Comments (12)@ken_adrian, i know this is an old thread but i did not want to start a new one for a similar question. Since you seem to know what you're talking about it when it comes to mums. I bought two huge mums at a local grocery store last year in fall sometime. We set them out obviously for fall but i just love them so much and because i seem to see my plants like rescued kittens when i find great bargains i hate to get rid of them. Any who! i took care of them last fall and put them in rather big planters. they came back for me this year and are a tad bit smaller which is fine by me. When i cut back my roses Feb 14th the next week i went out and fed and tidy up my garden beds including these two mums. when i went out to see the mums they had these woody sticks and some foliage. i cut all the woody sticks, thinking they were dead! either way, i'm just realizing this now as i'm typing this. not sure if this is why they're smaller now. so it's been warmer here in Dallas already. they are in full sun and i noticed that they are starting to 'break' and few have bloomed. I would love to see them in full bloom both in summer and fall but do not know if that's a possibility and if so, how do i achieve that. if not then fall is fine by me. But do i start pinching the blooms off now? thanks! Elce...See Moresandyslopes z5 n. UT
