Too late to plant chrysanthemums in Zone 5?

I had left some fall planting for my husband to do into a new bed he made while I left on a trip a month ago. I normally have good luck with planting very small, quart size mums, and having them last for years. (Larger ones, I have less success with them surviving the winter).

But he missed a few, or just ran out of time. He brought them in the house along with all the potted patio plants, a week or two ago. They look healthy. Some of the buds have dried up.

Is it too late to plant them outside? Or am I better off just treating them as houseplants, and seeing what happens? I have never tried keeping a mum in the house. Thanks!
