How to make my Calathea happy?
Comments (8)Calatheas are known for their fussiness. I believe what happened was it experienced stress from being allowed to go bone dry and I'm assuming you repotted it soon after purchase (trimming the roots wasn't a bad thing nor was repotting, but it may have also added to the stress level this plant was experiencing). They don't want wet feet, but they don't want to dry out completely either. Whatever you're doing with the clay pebbles seems to be working. That being said, it's obviously making a comeback with all those new shoots (they will turn into new "plants," still attached to "Mama," but a plant of its own). I'd just allow the leaves to die on their own. When they're dead, then cut them. That way you're not worrying about stressing it out and it could still be using those leaves to produce food (if they're still green on them, the plant is using them). They require high humidity, so what has worked for me (I have a Maranta, but they're related) is a big pebble tray that's full of water. That's all I do. But, everyone has a different school of thought and perhaps you will find something that works for you more. I believe the best option is a humidifier (but I don't have the money for that for one plant) and the least helpful thing is spraying it, the humidity only lasts as long as the water is on the plant/evaporating, then poof it's gone. Comments (18)All houseplants want bright light, some just don't want direct light, and you can't give your plant indirect light or filtered light that is too bright. If you are watering when the soil is still damp, there is virtually no chance you're under-watering. Odds significantly favor over-watering and/or a high level of soluble (mineral salts) in the soil solution as the issue, but appearances point to over-watering as your issue. Ideally, you would have your plant in a soil that makes over-watering a non-issue, which would also eliminate the potential high solubles/salt issue because you would then be able to water correctly w/o suffering the limitations exacted by a soil that remains saturated for extended periods (your current problem, by appearances). Comments (5)Mine do change color but by the time they do, the plant is disintegrating into dormancy and looks pretty ratty. Not sure I would plant it again. I have one clump in partial shade and one clump with a little a bit more sun. I have a sense that if it was closer to the house and I coddled it with attention, it might do better..... although what wouldn’t!...See MoreHow dirt makes you happy!
Comments (12)That is interesting research being done with Mycobateriam vaccae. My appreciation for the beneficial life that exists in the soil itself is relatively recent. Thought this line from some winter garden reading nailed the perspective I was raised with: Even those who are aware that soil nurtures plant life may think of it as more or less inert stuff, little more than a medium for nutrients and a structural material to anchor roots. From this viewpoint, soil is something to manipulate by adding this or that chemical element to feed plants ('Start with the Soil'). Otherwise, am currently on the fourth round of replanting spring bulbs a squirrel keeps digging out. My guess is that dusting the holes with bone meal occasionally attracts the most compulsive ones. The cover of coffee grounds applied yesterday is working so far. We gradually removed many of the foundation plants over the past few years leading up to brick repairs the masons completed last month. Some bed demo remains, but this year will be mostly rebuilding. Got started this weekend planting some fern/salvia divisions and the new 'Soft Caress' mahonia....See Moreaachenelf z5 Mpls
