Gentian

I bought a Gentian the other day from Lowe's. It's blooming but there are a lot of rotten old blossoms I had to take out. Does anyone know anything about dividing them? I can't seem to find much on the net about them. I'd like to plant it in front of a shrub next to the bottom of my waterfall and I'd like to see it spread one way or another.

I would think it's much too late in zone 4 to plant any perennial. It's almost too late here in zone 6.

hmmm.. a plant i am not aware of being z5 tolerant.. go figure ...

just stick it in the ground... IF it survives winter.. worry about dividing it then ...

if timing is borderline late.. why either waste the work.. or shock the heck out of it ... make sure you mulch it well to avoid winter heave.. since it might not have time to grab hold of the soil ...

Thanks RugbyHukr. That is the right genus. The species Arkansas recognizes is C. texense, and that isn't even listed by many sources. Using Weakley's key, it seems that C. erythrae is a good fit. I'll have to follow up with our local botanists to see which I've found.

If you are going to winter sow them in one of those black plastic germination trays with the domes, be watchful in the spring when the temps rise that the black plastic will heat up from the sun, and unless you take precautions to ensure good ventilation your seedlings can cook in their tray. It's happened to me more than once, and some very pricey seeds were squandered.

Because the flowers have been pollinated? And the added weight of the seeds pulls them over? IME, many, if not most, plants do this.
