Name That Plant!

HELP! What is this plant growing in my yard

I need help with an ID of this plant, this is a close up view of the flower. The Plant is about 4ft. tall with long stems. The leafs are thin and pointy and looks like a cannibus or hemp plant. It has beautiful blooms and I want to know how to care for it.

Cultural link below. The link says hardy down to Zone 7 and my AHS reference states to Zone 6. The USDA website data base shows it is native to VA down to FL. I had one at the back of my pond planted last fall and it did not make it, but as a child my father grew two not 65 miles from where I am and they came back every year.

Could be my plant was not labeled correctly or planted too late. It was a fall bargain plant that was in good shape but planted in mid to late October last year. Could be my Dad was a better gardener! LOL

Similar molds, lichens, and mosses grow in the grass also, and the plant pathology lab at WVU is the place to go for diagnosis. Contact your nearest Cooerative Extension Service for lab information. You also need a soil test. I read that iron sulfate will help the mold, but let the test(s) tell your for certain. I suspect the area is growing where there is limited sunlight, and it may also be constantly moist/over watered. send samples to plant pathology for diagnosis get a soil test to reveal pH balance and nutrient needs aerate to relieve compacted dethatch to reduce host plants irrigate 1 inch per week trim trees and bushes to improve sunlight and air circulation fertilize regularly but less in shady areas than normally recommended. Fertilize on schedule, just not as much. Here is yearly maintenance schedule near the top outlined in red.

For newcomers this site is actually pretty hard to navigate, edit, post and upload pictures. But since we are on the topic of Velvet Leaf and in light of the toilet paper madness because of covid19, I just gotta say.... If we ever DO have to worry about toilet paper shortages... (which is NOT at this time btw) I would just forage around for this plant! The leaves make an acceptable wipe (or so I heard).

the bird sits on the fence ... and plants a pre fertilized seed for you ... you will probably find hundreds of them in your yard.. over the years ... during the fruit season ... you will find purple poops on your cars.. your siding... your sidewalks ... everywhere ... unless you have acreage ... and space for one.. i would not recommend this tree as a positive .... in a small suburban yard ... ken ps: oh.. and you will also find raccoon skat that is all berry seed ... if your area is so inclined to such ...
