Raised bed garden going bad? Where do I buy compost?
Comments (6)Before purchasing anything labeled "topsoil" think about what it is you expect it to be. Since you already returned something being sold as "topsoil" since it was 80 percent clay would you expect other sources of "topsoil" to supply anything much different? A good garden soil will have about 92 percent mineral and about 8 percent organic matter which can be compost, leaf mold, shredded leaves, etc. I would not rely on the sellers assurances that what the seller is selling is what I want and have asked for about a 1 cup sample to test myself using this simple test. Soil test for organic matter. From that soil sample put enough of the rest to make a 4 inch level in a clear 1 quart jar, with a tight fitting lid. Fill that jar with water and replace the lid, tightly. Shake the jar vigorously and then let it stand for 24 hours. Your soil will settle out according to soil particle size and weight. For example, a good loam will have about 1-3/4 inch (about 45%) of sand on the bottom. about 1 inch (about 25%) of silt next, about 1 inch (25%) of clay above that, and about 1/4 inch (about 5%) of organic matter on the top...See MoreWhere can I buy a laundry room sink?
Comments (5)Here's the one I used. I had it at my old house and it was plenty big for me so I got it for my new house too. I have a pull out faucet with it so that I can fill really deep pails. It's only 20 gauge, which is fine for a laundry room. I got a single hole model. I got mine at Home Depot. Here is a link that might be useful: utility sink...See MoreAny Ideas Where I Can Find This Bed, and Do You Like Metal Beds?
Comments (25)There are pluses and minuses. I have slept in '80s brass beds, 1880s brass beds, and a more modern wrought iron bed. Here are some things to think about. - Metal beds originally became popular as a precaution against bedbugs. Bedbugs hide in wood furniture, so if you get an infestation simply replacing the mattress won't suffice. For most of my life, bedbugs were a quaint old affliction remembered only in good-night sayings. However, they are now back in a big way. If you travel at all, your luggage can carry bedbugs from a hotel (even a very nice hotel) right back to your own bed. If so, you may have to treat or replace the mattress but at least your bed will be easy to sanitize. - You need to plan out where your head goes. Banging your skull on metal is unpleasant. That means you need good-sized pillows for sleeping and extra fluffage for reading. And yes, pillows do have a tendency to slip behind the bed. - I found it pleasant to touch the cool metal with my hands when I was warm in bed. It sounds like nothing, but it actually made a difference in comfort . - By all means get a well-made bed if you go metal. Cheap metal beds flex and move and bend even more than cheap wooden ones. A poorly made bed will make you feel like you are sleeping in a lifeboat on open seas....See MoreWhere should I buy bedroom furniture?
Comments (6)Depends on your budget and lifestyle needs. If you have little in funds and move around a lot thus leaving stuff by the curb is possible you go to ikea or living spaces; most of the wood furniture I have is Ethan Allen from a collection they stopped making in the early 90s (inherited but love the pieces) the bed is thomasville early 2000s and the nightstands are as well - good thing the mister didn’t have a lot of furniture before we started living together and what he had was...well...crap. ;) Wood furniture that is well taken care of is the kind of stuff I will absolutely sacrifice other things to keep - if there’s limited space in a shipping container for moving it’s those pieces that I give priority and put substantial care in packing....See More- 9 years ago
