Guess what happens when you get a new roof...

I knew it would happen...trampled areas of one garden...and, that's why I waited until the Fall. But, it's so strange to see things mangled and the soil just matted down and extremely hard. I probably just need to level everything and wait til Spring. But I'd really like to do something to soften up the soil...not sure what. Should I just sprinkle some gypsum around the soil in plants? The ground seems too hard to mix it in. Any thoughts? Butterfly plants, Hibiscus, Lobelia, Boltonia, Agastache and others grow ok there.
