Does anyone else find the pic that represent this forum a bit dorky? For all the color we end up with come summer, black and white doesn't seem very appropriate, though it is reminiscent of the bleak time of year we're busy.

It kind of reminds me of a pic someone tried to take of a snowflake back in the 1950's with a not so up-to-date crappy camera. lol.

Honestly, I think we need a much better represention picture up there - maybe an open jug with bright green sprouts? Some kind of seeds? A pile of mixed up seeds? A stack of seed packets? (don't laugh - you all know you're there!)

Hmmm...I bet (know) some of you have some awesome pics to use that would be a thousand times better than what's up there!!

Maybe we should do a contest (have Trudi/vote count pick winner?) and do an email campaign to ivillage to change it?

I think I remember a discussion about this in the cottage garden forum with theirs, but it never went anywhere.

Or, maybe I'm just nuts and simply bored with looking at it and y'all like it?

How about a pic of milk jugs and/or 2 ltr pop bottles in the snow?

I like Duane's idea. that is cute!! I am a newbie but the picture is a little dull to me.

Nice sprouts! Looks like you are in the same dither I am - when I get time to garden I can't decide whether to sow more seeds or plant out the ones that have sprouted! No wonder dh thinks I've lost my mind.

Thank you all. Yes has been quite a ride so far. Starting a few things now so I guess I will be adding to the madness in the fall. I really like the way that bed has turned out as well. I still have to finish off the very end. Ran out of stones an just have not gotten to it yet. The daisies were my favorite as well. They are about done now. So plan to add some more next year. Had to move some things around because I had them too close. I didn't have enough faith the would grow from a seedling clump to...a small jungle.lol Bonnie : )

Thank you Donna Mae.. I heard about the early blight; I thought maybe I had it for a while, had some leaves turn yellow and fall off, but I think it was more that I was not watering properly. I probably won't get as many tomatoes as I should; there are a lot of things I did wrong but it's all a learning process and there is always next year. I must confess that the melon was more "early spring sown" rather than wintersown. But I did use winter sowing techniques including a container which would warm the soil sooner and a clear plastic cover to hold in the heat of the sun at night. Lois in PA

I do like the photo (I think Trudi picked it out, BTW) because of what you pointed out -- it is reminiscent of the bleakness of winter, and the seed pod looks like a snowflake.

But after a few years, it's nice to have a change! A jug full of sprouts is a happy reminder to every newbie that the method really works! That's what I'd like to see.

How about milk jugs buried in snow AND next to it a big indoor shelf system with grow lights, a red circle around it and an X through it? (like a no smoking sign)

How about the eyeball in the jug looking at the sprouts???? No, that might make people think twice about joining this lovely group! :O)

omgosh Seedmama.. I just spewed my tea all over my keyboard after seein' that, my daughter looked up and she started crackin' up too... whew!

I LOVE THE PICTURE WE HAVE!
Even though I am not sure what it is. It is so perfect for the subject, so beautiful and seeming frozen, sort of a seed, sort of a flower.
I think the picture drew me in..

Seedmama, thank goodness there aren't any pics of me rooting around in that recycle bin! After all, it wasn't my mug that the cop saw first. :-P

It's a picture of a poppy pod, it looks like a snowflake.

Being as poppies are one of our best sprouters and an iconic variety for Hunk O Seedlings I always thought that Spike chose well.

I must confess, I'd never given the picture much thought. It just WAS. But now that I know the symbolism behind it, I'll see it in a different light. I'm also making a mental note to share this info once a year or so because I think others will find it interesting as well.

Actually sewobsessed I'm glad you brought it up 'cause I didn't know what it was a pic of! After Trudi said "Poppy pod" I looked again and thought "duh, now I see it!" I would have guessed snow flake.

After reading the background the pic does fit the subject well. I did not realize it was a poppy pod, that is a good choice. too bad it is not in color though.
