What is the best reference book on azaleas? One that has photos and descriptions of different varieties?

Probably Galle, 'Azaleas' (Timber Press). Are you looking for comprehensive, or something else? This one is big and thick, with lots of azaleas and some pictures, but not up-to-the-minute or lavishly illustrated.

Actually I want a reference book with accurate pictures, if one exists. It drives me crazy driving down the road seeing the same azaleas everywhere and not knowing what they are. Whenever I go to a nursery none are tagged! so I can't even learn when I go to a nursery.

Well, it's not broken out by plant exactly, but I've got a book called "What's Wrong With My Plant (And How To Fix It)", by David Deardorff and Kathryn Wadsworth. It's got lots of pictures and a guide that helps you figure out what's going on. It was recommended to me by the Master Gardeners society in my area and I've used it a couple times. Larry, I think most hp books pre-70's were drawings. I have a few oldies; a couple have actual black and white pics. Tiff, thought the book you have is one I found on Amazon several years ago..it's not..Mine is A-Z Encyclopedia of Garden Plants.. However, I will take a peek at your book via Amazon. FPT...When I first posted the binders here on Ebay, 'was it 9 yrs?' ppl were emailing, left and right, asking where I got them. lol. Yes, 36 cards were sent via snail mail every three wks. I can't be sure, but think it took 1.5 years before collecting all six binders. Check Ebay. Every so often ppl have these binders for sale. One woman emailed me about the binders. I told her to go to Ebay..FPT, she got all 6 books for 49.00!!!!! Excellent condition. I couldn't believe it. lol. Most Ebay sellers have the first binder, but I've seen other binders, too. So, it can't hurt to check, and do so periodically. Wow, C&S's and Foliage..the best parts..lol. Hope you locate them. I'm with Tiff about not buying Kindle. lol. Sorry folks. I love computers, but a book is much easier carrying around, and no need to push a buttom. And less money, too. I read everywhere..and I mean everywhere..Doc's office, while Waiting, before going to bed, in the yard, etc. Everywhere. Purple, guess I'm like George, too. lol. Toni

I have a shelf full of gardening books, Eliot Coleman, Ed Smith, and others. I'm sorry to say that although all these books have useful information, they also all contain erroneous information. I have not found one source of information that is authoritative and current. I suppose it's the currency of the information that's the issue. You'd think that after how-many thousands of years of farming and gardening, we'd have learned something. But they are still finding out some very important lessons that have not yet made it into consumer-level print. For example, the information about mycorrhizal relationships, and how to nurture them is still mostly found on-line. If I had to pick one, I'd go with one of Eliot Coleman's latest books. But this forum is one of the best sources of information and ideas. Check out posts by loid (pt03), borderbarb, dan_staley, cyrus_gardener, digdirt. I'll have to check John Jeavon's book from the library.

Glad you liked it, idig! I get more enjoyment from a movie or book when I share it with somone else. Never visited the Royal Horticultural Society site before, but did today. As usual, the British are veddy dedicated to their passions. One being gardening. Some of our native plants like phlox were taken across the ocean and given the full treatment by these avid gardeners, and became truly magnificent. Of course, it is good to know the old native is still available right here at home still. Our countryside has a wealth of plants coveted or appreciated by the rest of the gardening world. We are lucky to live in a climate which permits such things to flourish. If we begin a new thread, what would it cover? Movies for sure, books on gardening in general? Let me know what ou think of the movie CROSS CREEK. I pick many movies because of the scenery or the house or garden. I was sorely disappointed in MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE because I expected to see more of the old house interior. Not to be. And then by the same author, NIGHTS IN RODANTHE had a real spooky looking house perched with its toes in the Atlantic, which didn't look real but maybe it was, but the closeup details were interesting. Like the old exterior shutter mechanisms, the old kitchen and the furnishings, which reminded me of old bay houses along Mobile Bay here. I'm into "comfortable casual shack" which is a few steps beyond "shabby chic" if you know what I mean.

There are many kinds of azaleas. To make reliable determinations you will have to start viewing labeled specimens in collections and nurseries, comparing sample pieces (with flowers present) of ones to be identified with these, looking up descriptions of likely suspects in books and on the internet...

As always, Ron is offering very sage advice. I'll comment further on Galle's 'AZALEAS'. It is THE best azalea book to date, with hundreds (over 360) of beautiful photographs. However, it was last revised in the late 80's I think! Someone correct me if I'm wrong about that.

With access to the internet, PLUS a book like this one, you can't go wrong. New hybrids are presented all of the time, and book publishing just can't keep up with it. Even though Galle discusses over 6000 cultivars, he's outdated by now.

'AZALEAS' can be found at various on line book stores, new and used.

I figured Fred Galle's book was still the Holy Script on azaleas. Almost 400 photos should give me some ideas on what some of these old die-hards around here are. Although I probably wouldn't buy them, lol, it's more a matter of curiosity. I like the natives too much, although I also have a few Encore Amethysts I really like. I have a relative who works at the county library, she should be able to get the book for me.

" I like the natives too much" Then try the Clarence Towe book American Azaleas (also by Timber Press) as well as the Galle book.

The Galle book has a small section on natives but is THE BOOK on azaleas because it covers EVERYTHING.

Yes, that's what Dirr said in his manual about Galle's book. I'll look at the book on natives, too.
