Do you cover sprouted jugs when temp dips to freezing?

Do you cover sprouted jugs when temp dips to freezing?

or do you leave them alone?

Sorry for another question. I guess I am not quite sure what to do next. It was 70 degrees here today will be about 40 tonight and tomorrow night below freezing.

So far I only have 2 jugs sprouted but I am just not sure what to do next...

I don't remove the tops until the jugs have finished sprouting - then, if there's a really cold night or two, I might throw a towel over the container.

I do if the plant requires it. Meaning it is a tender annual or something I prize a whole lot. Actually I just bring the jug into an unheated porch..for me that is easier. It doesn't happen to often though. I've done it once in a blue moon! It depends on how cold the freeze is going to be too.

Confessions Of An Over Planner: When I moved to this climate I bought an enormous roll of burlap and a buttload of floating row covers because I was afraid of cold weather. I already had many cheap, large garbage cans I thought that I could use for the same thing. In addition, I have been collecting outdoor string lights during January sales for years. I also had a collection of small bamboo stakes and scored the motherload of bamboo when I picked up three huge bundles of very large ones a neighbor put out for trash. And finally, I have a roll of chicken wire and a bunch of short fenceposts with which to build cages. I have yet to use any of it and it will be five years next month. That said I have it if I need it. When the big one comes I will use lights on those most precious (I intentionally placed my tropicalesque bed close enough to run cords to a power source) with a teepee of one of the cloth substances. Others will just get teepees. And yes, my garage is full of things I have never used. But I have them on hand and that itself is a comfort.

I wish it was 14 here too. Yesterday I was out in the morning and it was 6. I kind of like it when the snow is on top of my containers and they are frozen. I know for sure they do not need water this way. I know last year I was worried like crazy. I kept asking if the jugs would be ok. I even misted them with water when frozen. This year I plop them outside and forget about them. Don't worry just sow and forget about them :)

I did open the jugs up that had not sprouted from 12/30 and the soil seems moist when you feel it in your fingers. I took an exacto knife and cut a few slits near the bottom of the jugs, used the same knife and lightly raked over the seeds to give them more contact with the soil...taped them back up again. I'll give them another week, if nothing starts by then, I'll just sow more. I looked back on my Dave's garden diary/blog where I've been keeping notes, and I was using up some MG moisture control potting mix at that time. I had purchased it last Summer. I have more seeds of all I put out in those jugs..chalk it up for experience..we all know gardening is all trial and error sometimes. Thank You all for your advice.

Makes sense that if grown-up plants won't tolerate the cold, then their little babies won't either. However, my maters have been resistant to about 28 degrees, as long as it's dry (no frost). Unlikely if you have a lot of condensation on your jugs, so if it's not too much trouble, just take those babies to the garage. Why risk it? Does anyone know if tomatillos will WS? They seem a close relative to tomatoes, but they also are native to parts that are much more temperate than where I live. I sowed some with my 'maters this year (okay, first time I've WS'd at all, to be honest!), and will report back; but I was wondering if anyone had some feedback? I have seen mostly flowers WS, but I am hoping to start my entire vegetable & herb garden this way...

thanks both of you!!

It will be 31 tomorrow night and around that every night for a few days.

So far I only 2 jugs sprouted. I guess I will possible cover if it gets really cold.

If some don't survive then they were to weak anyway :) I guess.

Anything you've sown up til now should be fine to withstand the cold temps. Like ghoghunter said, it's the tenders that are usually the finicky ones.

I babysit almost nothing of the ones I've got out there now. After I've sown the tenders, THOSE are the ones I babysit more.

Thanks everyone!

I did accidentally sow some tenders (before I realized they should have been done later) so I was worried. What has sprouted for me so far is not tender so for now I am ok.

I did some marigolds, petunia, nicotina and some others that might be considered tender so I wanted to give them their best shot.
