If you want to "plant moss" just put a chunk of moss in a blender with some buttermilk or yogurt. Then sprinkle this mixture around where you want moss. In case you are wondering, the milk is to provide a moist acidic carrier and the spores in the moss are what will grow. As jean001 said, it works best in a moist shaded area with compacted soil. Some moss will turn brown during a severe drought, reviving when moisture returns. Some species are known to survive for as long as ten years without water. Most diseases and insects that affect grass do not bother moss, although moss does not like air pollution (it is seldom found along the roadside. No need to improve and lime the soil since mosses grow easily on compact clay soil and most types can be easily encouraged by an acid soil (pH 5.5 is optimum) and by moisture. Hello Derrick, A great job on the images and website. Would like to recommend that you id the images so that when you run your pointer over the image the name pops up or some tidbit of info if you do not know the name. I think the programming is to embed this command alt=" name " I really like mosses though I am way down in california. The only mosses that I have seen tend to dry back in the summer time. nothing like what you have up there for sure! I also recommend that you check under other plants as the moss flora under different plants can be very interesting and very very very small. Cheers.

There are some lichens such as the dog lichen (Peltigera canina) that grow happily in lawns and are relatively quick to spread. Thank God no though..You would of had me on another journey to another addiction..lol I would spend the whole year looking for moss through caves, mountains, along streams, people's yards, the forest and so on...
