FWIW - 'drainage' and flow-through rates are two different things. Sand, including builder's or mason's sand, is too fine to afford good drainage and aeration, especially when compined with a fraction of peat, compost, and/or other small particles like topsoil or most bagged mixes, even in view of the fact that sand normally has a favorable flow-through rate. The first three pics are the fast draining, well-aerated soil I grow all my houseplants in. thanks for all the great information. I've been googling all over for the perfect fit but i've been so adamant about fragrance...I guess I need to recalibrate a bit :) i have some david austins planted in that bed but further from that wall. it was suggested to me by someone that has them in the same zone but lower in the state she said they can take the heat...tamora, carding mill. i don't have anything against the wall other than a gemini. I do have a couple of sprayers that I was considering what to do with them...now I will use them for the trellis area. Abe Darby, Lady Emma Hamilton, and Jude the Obscure are all roses on my wishlist...maybe i'll try 1 or 2 of those mixed with something hardier like angel face...it looks lovely! i'm debating a young lycidas near the wall also...i've read here that it seems to do well in heat. i'm still looking for a creamy white climber that does well in the heat...fragrance or no...with a full cupped blossom...anyone have known performers? thank you.

I have a tendency to want to grow EVERYTHING that is gorgeous and interesting to ME, and very often customers want to know what "this" flower is and "that" flower is, never knowing it existed! There are some here that are OBVIOUSLY not suitable for cutting (stem length-alyssum/hollyhock/morning glory, too "wild & rangy"-like ratibida, not long enough lasting-papaver?, or just not worth it in a zone with a short growing season like mine) but if something here "seems" unable to be cut, but YOU KNOW CAN be cut for SHORT bouquets, please inform me! I don't have that much more room in my yard, so I really need to pare this list down! Also, if any of these are much better GROWING FROM AN ESTABLISHED PLANT, instead of by my starting from seed, would you mind letting me know?
