Pruned my Azaleas, I don't think I did it right

Needless to say, I have a brown thumb.

I have two Azaleas that I just purchased about a week ago from my local nursery. We haven't even planted them yet - because of weather conditions and because we aren't finished with our newly installed patio yet. We're still working on the landscaping.

I read that you should deadhead Azaleas just after they bloom. Well, the blooms are spent. So, I just cut them off - but, I think I did this wrong. Instead of cutting at the base of the "bloom" area, I cut beneath them on the stem. So now there's just a bare stem with a cut mark. My best guess is that this isn't right.

Can I expect that these are going to recover and bloom next year, or do I need to count my losses at this point and add this to my many "DUH" gardening moments?
