Photo's of rhododendrons, azaleas and vireyas

Hello all,

I found a wonderful website where you can send your (garden)-photo's to.

It is a virtual arboretum and lists more than 800 species, and 700 hybrids.

Definitely not a commercial site.... seems more like a 10 year project.

This site belongs to Herman van Ree of Gelderland, Holland.

At the present time he has photos for 86 plants. Much more advanced sites include:

http://www.rhododendron.org/search_intro.asp for rhododendrons with 1,400 names and many pictures.

and

http://www.azaleas.org/azxintro.html for azaleas with 10,000 names and many pictures.

I would encourage people who want to participate in photo projects to participate in these much further advanced projects which are backed by the American Rhododendron Society and the Azaleas Society of America which are both international societies despite their names.

Good comment Rhodyman,

but I think you're missing the point.
I would like people to send in picture's of their rhodo's/gardens.
S0 rhodo's with children's bikes in front, with the dog under it, attempts to prune a rhodo, and so on.

I'm sure the ARS (I'm member myself) is not waiting for those kind of pictures.

By the way, the number of photo's has gone up to well over 200 now, hybrids and species in total over 3000.

I'm trying to keep up the good work

First of all, "azalea" is botanically known as Rhododendron. Unfortunately I can't tell from here if this is what is commonly called "rhododendron". It would be helpful to see a close up of the buds. Where do you live?

As I said before, welcome back! Nice to see your lovely photos again. I still stop by every day, to see how things are doing "down under". At times it's been" few and far between" posts, but it seems to have become more popular lately. Looking forward to seeing more of your photos. It's an early winter here. most days and nights are in the minus ÃÂ°C but we are still "warm"against the prairies -25ÃÂ°C or so.

Rejuvenate prune or get rid of Azaleas & Rhododendron?

The first thing to do - and I do not mean this in any sort of unkind way - is to learn the identity of what you have growing so that they are more definite than just trees and bushes. This would also prevent the inadvertent destruction of something valuable and help guide decisions about placement. As for the rhododendron and azaleas, much is a matter of personal taste. The azaleas especially will respond quickly to even radical pruning and you will lose only a year or two of bloom. They are also one of the few types of shrub that can grow close to a foundation without any worries about invasive roots. For all of them, why not wait a year or so and see how they respond to the increased light brought about by the tree removal. Azaleas and rhododendrons are among the easiest plants to move even when quite large so there is no real reason to do it immediately. If, on the other hand, you have a clear vision of what you want - and this does not seem to be a shady woodland type garden - then remove them. It's your property to do with as you wish.

I have a bunch (50-ish), mostly grown fairly easily from cuttings. But I live in Hawaii and belong to the Vireya Society, so have the perfect climate and access to plants. Ok,

People keep sending me rhododendron photo's for my project at:

However sometimes the name tag got lost....
If anyone can help to identify the 'unknown' rhodos?
