Really basic question about azalea pruning

Hi:

I've read several posts here, and some of the great links people have posted, and I still have a really basic question about pruning azaleas. I hope some kind, patient azalea expert will answer!

When it's said that pruning anywhere along the "stem" will produce new buds, does that actually mean anywhere along what I'd call a branch? Or is stem a term for growth less than x years old? And if so, how can I tell how old a particular area is?

I pruned a neighbor's azalea, and removing the high areas resulted in a "hole" in the top of the bush. I warned her beforehand, and that I really didn't know if the old interior branches would actually sprout new growth. She wanted it done anyway, but I'd love to be able to tell her that the bush will fill in.

Thanks!
