Traveler Redbud...to resemble old Lavender Twist

Sadly...my zone isn't a 6. :O( it is exactly the look I want verses the weeping style they now stake the lavender twist into.

Mind you...I like the weeping form. Just want the Ruby Falls. With cleaner lines for the weeping effect.

But admire the old short squatty twisted tree...wanting it for the back part of our waterfall.

We sometimes are classified as 6 on other sites. But we are actually a 5b the nursery says. But they are trying to reclassify our zone to a 6. But some winters are harsher and throws us out of that zone.

But the nursery said they will work with us to locate something in our zone.

I saw Traveler at a local nursery. I want one but pricey!

I hear ya! Envious you seen a traveler in person though...

When I'm limited to black walnuts in the ravine I have to just bite the bullet. Though we have been blessed with FREE plants from a few folk. 15 or so...along with what we planted things don't look so bare. (Established flowerbeds last year) Planting on the rocky waterfall tucking in flower ends here and there keep the soil From being contaminated by the roots if the walnut. But sadly where we need to plant these we are dealing with what will survive there. Due to the walnut tree. I want a nice flowering substance tree/shrub. I have three hibiscus...Rose of Sharon...lil'Kim...and a Rose Mallow. The list is so limited to things I can plant...I have one zone pet friendly which also makes it more difficult.

I want two redbuds next spring...I am pretty sure the weeping Ruby Falls and a Lavender Twist allowed to go natural. Trunk no more than 1 1/2 ft. From where branches start. I want a low laying branch look more like they have gotten with the Traveler.

After years back losing $$$$ on everything dying. We would rather pay and have success. Planted two weeping cheeries. One we planted the other a nursery...both died. The nursery (one we no longer deal with) wouldn't hold up to the refund we were told they would stand by if they planted it. So $$$ waisted. Figured later we know about the roots of a walnut...that was the problem. So...little by little. We bite the bullet and get what will survive and live.

But hope to achieve the same look of the Traveler...with an un-staked Lavender Twist.

Mmm, autumn always seems like the start of the gardeners year - new bulbs, lots of pruning, cuttings for overwintering, harvest, ladling on compost and planting the new bare root fruits, roses and shrubs. After a truly bizarre rainless summer, the allotment has turned sere and brown much earlier than usual. Rudbeckias, dahlias and heleniums and asters had an attenuated show - I always struggle with these prairie type beauties on my sandy soil but one must have them. This year, not even emergency hosing was going to prolong the luminous late summer show of golds, bronzes and purples so I turned my face to the gravel garden which never fails to thrive. Melissa, how I love spanish broom - yep, Spartium junceum can be a thug but what a gorgeous fragrant and elegant one. They twist and bend, making fantastically gnarly shapes and grow huge and fat in East Anglia. Cytisus also grows to shocking tree size, as does Tamarix. Desperate savage pruning has been done. even though the shrubs in question are less than 6 years old, they are eating the shed. A glorious stipa gigantea, planted so carefully to filter the low evening sun, has been overshadowed one one side and totally mugged by a giant acanthus on the other. In truth, the entire gravel garden has to be redone, lifting the remnants of the old membrane (which utterly failed to prevent the millions of verbena, centranthus, ox-eye daisies, althea and eryngiums from seeding with total abandon) and replacing plants which should never have been placed there (legion - Dieramas, Schizostylus, echinaceas - embarrassing how clueless I was to plant these moisture lovers in gravel!!!)Then there are the plants which clearly love it but are far too keen - helianthemums, nepetas, salvias, hebes - small cushions are ground swallowing mounds. Apart from lots of lavender - I have hedges of L Hidcote - the deepest blue, I do not have as many silver plants as I would like. A colony of pulsatilla does well with summer silky seedheads. Santolina and a lone artemisia (Powis Castle - another huge thing). Would like to try astelia and also celmisias. A plant grown much by Ingrid, and a revelation to me, was Limonium - violetta, I have and it looks terrific with eryngiums and stipa tenuissima. Stachys or Phlomis have, so far, failed to touch my heart and I have done verbascums to death. Still throwing out flowers is the modest Zauschneria, looking good with the last of the escholzias, Salvia greggii and microphylla are flowering profusely and unstoppable. Also, pushing out another cycle of flowers - a lovelu silver leafed mound of erodium chrysantha (might be good for you, Melissa, it is a lovely thing). However, much of this is happening out of my sight since I am woefully stuck at home in a kitchen which resembles Entebbe. A simple flooring job turned into armageddon - the massively heavy cast-iron and enamel sink is upside down on the sofa, the old washing machine has been drug to the tip and a new (to me) one has arrived - although the sink issue means it is still in the middle of the kitchen. Am running out of knickers and socks - may have to be a slut and turn them inside out since the whole water system is now only usable with a lot of fiddling about with stopcocks. In a moment of frenzy, I thought we may as well go the whole way and ripped off great swathes of old painted wallpaper - which of course, came off really easily....on one wall - the rest seems as though it was cemented in position. The ingrates (offspring) have absented themselves for large amounts of time yet still manage to materialise at sensitive (shouty, sweary) moments and chip in with ludicrous suggestions (we could put speakers in the new sink cupboards, why don't we have an indoor hammock?)Estimates of finishing time have gone from 'around a week' to 'in time for Christmas'. We are eating a lot of 'bread based snacks' - although the rate of jam consumption is worrying as I was definately slack this year, using the virusey raspberries as an excuse to cut down on all the 'earth mother' nonsense I had somehow got myself into(what was I thinking?) May be forced onto chocolate spread - sweetheart can have marmalade (shudder). Even so, it has been a spectacular tomato year (no rain - no blight)- have had kilos and kilos from 40 plants. I now have wrists of iron from poking hundreds of tomatoes through a sieve. The first bareroots will be arriving soon so I will have every reason to flee the kitchen chaos.

good lord the general plant trade forum is getting soooo frustrating!! i've made a few posts in which i'm very specific about what i want, but do people read them or check my pages? absolutely not!! it's the same gripe i've had for a while, but it's driving me crazy again!! there really isn't anywhere else for me to go for plant trading and i HATE ordering out of catalogues, it's always such a dissappointment. ok...i was going to continue with my rant, but i appear to have run out of steam!! paul do you have any named epi cuttings you want to trade? well since no ones actually said anything about a june swap and i can't find anything, i'll take point on this one too. july will be the food swap. sign up needs to be by 10 pm est, sunday, june 11. it'll be called the make your partner smile box. there are no rules, except that it must contain at least five plants. one of these must be a plant that you love, but they don't have listed as either a have or a want. tell them why you love it. the deadline for mailing will be june 28. i was just saying daylilly, hosta, iris, sedum, heuchera trade since we all seem to collect those. partners will be posted sunday night, after 10 pm. thanks yall cody

I Just have to say, after reading some of these comments, I'm surprised at some of you mothers on here. I am a mother of 3 kids; one of which is SEVERELY MENTALLY AND PHYSICALLY DISABLED! While my husband and I spend 95% of the day fighting to keep this boy contained, it is with great difficulty. He also happens to have REALITY DISTORTION! For those who don't know what that means, it means at any given moment, he slips off into a completely different world. He Will NEVER be able to be left alone. We have done very well at keeping him close for 9years, but this summer, we plan to renew our vows by a large river. As any parent with an also autistic child knows, they Will do anything to get to That water. For the first time, we plan to use a child safety harness in order to allow our child to enjoy the festivities without the worry of him floating down the river. So please, before you go telling someone how much of a horrible parent they are for using these, I challenge you to spend a week with a special needs child and tell me if you feel the same way. These devices have been created to give them more freedom while keeping them as safe as possible. Thank you

when i look at this thing.. all i see is a heavily trained.. read that.. pruned.. plant ...

someone spent a decade MAKING it into what you see ..

as such.. they are not cheap ....

but in my cheap world ... i would buy a babe.. and prune the bee-gee-bees out of it ... and save a heck of a lot of money ...

this plant is Cercis texensis 'Traveller' ..

the redbud you need.. needs to be in the C canendensis family.. to be fully hardy in your zone ...

and your option is: Lavender TwistÃÂ® Redbud ....Cercis canadensis 'Covey'

that is the whole point of the latin ID ... in case other readers dont know that .. i bet you do ...

anyway .... my point was.. simply.. prune one anyway you want.. there is nothing special about this one .. IMHO ....

Yes...but every Covey I have found...has been staked. :O( which is crazy to not offer one naturally. The nursery also stated as you Ken. I need a young lavender twist/covey...with low laying branches. Some have high laying branches. I can picture lovingly staking it into my desired tree...but will also have to understand it will still do as it will at times. Just wish the Traveler was in my zone. Some sites say they are zone 5 but not many boast that.
They are somewhat fast growers. So I have that on my side. I figure I'll have around $150-$200 in one even a babe. I want first dibs on their delivery when it arrives. Sounds like they are willing to call me when they get it in as well. (I have ordered many plants from them...they even held a bush for me since I was leaving on a mission trip to properly water it until I could pick it up) I would rather pay for a pick of the selection than just randomly sent one.

How old of a tree do you feel the traveler posted here is!?! Just curious...

He a bit of bad luck today...there is a short of something in my jeep. And the back cargo window wouldn't close. It locked once I opened it. Making it impossible to close. Called my mechanic who tried to help me over the phone trouble shoot to disengage the window latch...to no avail. Because my automatic door locks also failed. (I had tried to unlock the mechanism that way prior to making the call to the mechanic)

So being unable to drive with the window open...warning sticker says one can efixeiate themselves. I stopped at the nursery in the parking lot of the mall I had been shopping for something to tie it closed with.

Upon discussing the Lavender Twist...and being unable to find a nursery with one un-staked taking on the original form of a short and squatty form...he stood with his mouth open...and was like...we sold our last one a few weeks ago.

O.o so I am standing there...thinking of my good fortune that I found a nursery that at least offered them in one of the forms I wish to have in my yard. Trouble is...I don't know the name of the nursery...he told me to contact another nursery that is their affiliate. In Canton,Ohio...came home...did a Google search...NOTHING! I may have to make another trip to the mall...to learn more about it. I know they are a larger nursery. Shipping many plants to the location in the parking lot of the mall there.
