overfertilized pots

A friend potted up her callas with a fortified mix (Miracle Gro, I think). She got the most amazing foliage but few flowers. The 2-3 flowers were large and completely green. I am assuming this is because of soil that is too rich.

I like to leave my callas in the pots over winter, in the basement and then just stick them outside again next year, and away we go. Has worked great for 5 years. I am going to store my friend's pots as well. The question is: Will we need to replace the soil in her pots if we want to avoid an "all foliage" display again next year? Or can we assume that the excess fertilizer is probably depleted and the soil is adequately lean?

My preference is to just leave them in the pots; keep effort to a minimum if possible. Anyone have any thoughts on this? thanks.
