Anyone dealing with caterpillar-eaten Exbury Az?

I have the tiny green caterpillars eating the leaves, give-a-way being the tiny black droppings beneath their 'current chomping place'. Is constant spraying with insecticide as long as their leafed out the only answer? What should I use?

I had them previously in too much shade, now they're in about a 3-4 hour sun exposure. Do they need more sun than that? I noticed some neighbors nice looking ones from a distance, and was able to get up close to one, and saw the same caterpillar and damage. It was in a partial shade location, but not sure how much. Any advice? Thanks-
