Question about potting a mum and leaving it in shade

I just want to pot a mum and leave it by my front door, which is fully shaded and only receives indirect light during the day

I rally only want it for the months of october through november

Will it do ok in full shade for a couple of months?

absolutely ....

its nearly evergreen.. and nothing is going to die in two months ... from reduced light ...

the the blooming might slow down by then ... but you probably wont notice in that time frame ...

but i would NOT repot it ... just plant it.. pot and all ... then lift out out and throw it all away.. when you are done ...

why stress it.. needlessly ...

I think a lot will depend on its flowering condition :-)) Mums sold for fall color tend to be very heavily budded - best to purchase them in bud rather than bloom as the flowers tend to go over rapidly. But the development of the buds into flowers is certainly stimulated by sunlight. Excessive shade may very well stunt or abort the flowering.

So you've got this choice to make - a heavily budded plant that may not fully develop its flowering potential in that much shade or one already into its flowering cycle that may not produce for as long as you like (IME, a ready-to-go mum lasts about 2-3 weeks max in bloom).

Mary, Yes. And I would watch the soil doesn't stay too wet for too long. A 2" pot would probably not be stable enough for a 9" plant even though it is mostly smaller leaves. When the plant is actively growing, you can start taking off the older leaves. One at a time,not all at once. It will stress the plant all over again. And you may have to pot down again. Patience is the keyword here! Linda

I found several sites with information about overwintering mums. I put one of the links below. I've always understood that there are winter hardy mums and non winter hardy mums. If he included it in the pot of mums, there should be a tag that tells what is the lowest temperatures your mums can handle. I know that some of the ones I bought this year are hardy to -10 to -20 F. In my part of the country, that's pretty marginal. However, I will plant them outdoors and hope for the best. We get a very heavy (lake effect) snow cover all winter, and that gives all marginal outdoor plants a better chance to survive.

The green indicates your using and applying good watering I tend to think the red indicates that it may be just a little to warm outside for it this time of the year. Not to suggest you would want to move it but if so and want a suggestion I sit mine inside at a S X SE window behind a apx 30% UV sun filter screen for early morning sun. It sits in the open window area until early Spet then is bought outside for flowering initiation. Note: there is a four zone difference between here and there.

yep.. i would pick one.. with one single flower open... to confirm color ...

and enjoy it for a month ...

but i still would not repot it ...
