all garden mums ...?

I love the garden mums that are blooming now when most everything else has stopped. I have some that are several years old & looking kind of rank/rangy ... is that common for them to look this way after a few years? Should I dig them up & plant fresh new ones or can these old ones be rejuvanated? Our soil has to be heavily ammended as it is of the caliche type where I live but where my son lives it is soil/volcanic ammended & it seems they prefer that sandy soil. What are the best conditions to grow good garden mums? When to fertilize? When I prune in late Spring to encourage bushier plants I do have some success when I dig in some of the cuttings & a few of them take root!
