Hose end sprayer for Daconil?

What's the best way to use a hose-end sprayer for spraying concentrated Daconil? I tried it once and ended up with loads of white film spots all over my roses and other perennials because I guess it wouldn't mix right in the sprayer. Should I dilute the Daconil with water first and spray the dilute?

If anybody speaks from experience with this particular combo, listen to them, not me. But here are some generalities:

1. Daconil is supposed to leave a whitish coating, but it shouldn't be thick and opaque. You could try mixing some water in.

2. Hose-end sprayers are very inaccurate in the mixture they deliver. I think you should be using a pump-up tank sprayer (around $15).

I would be afraid to use a hose end sprayer because of the possibily of back up into the house drinking water.

The reviews on Walmart's website are equally bad. Looks like Scotts/Miracle Grow turned a good product into a real piece of junk. I have one of the older ones that had a cracked spray nozzle (over tightened it) and was able to repair it with some Loctite 2 part epoxy.

Using hose-end sprayer for 5-1-1?

Has anyone attempted this? I've gotten to where I have plants in large containers of 5-1-1 (I'm also trying gritty mix this year), and when I want to do Foliage Pro feedings, refilling and remixing my 2 gallon watering can 20 times and it's taking forever. Has anyone done this successfully? If so, what is a good brand of sprayer to use? Secondly, how do you properly calibrate it, and get it to release the right amount of solution evenly, and finally, doesn't the GPM flow of the water it's self have anything to do with it? I have pretty high water pressure. Or do you use a restricter in the sprayer to keep it no greater than a certain amount?

I tried to help you with this one when you first posted it. I put aside my question then as to why you would even want to use it or one like it. But I'll ask now. I looked up the sprayer in several places trying to find anywhere - the settings instructions for it. No luck. So without having one in hand to explore and work with I think the answer is impossible. It is clearly intended for use only with their products as those products include the setting instructions on their bottle labels. Check your Neptune's label to see if it doesn't include "hose-end sprayer instructions". I doubt it but it is possible. If foliar feeding is your goal then any standard $10 1 or 2 gallon garden sprayer will serve you much better and it is easy to mix anything in. I'd return this is possible for a refund. Keep in mind that with foliar feeding you normally use the product at a more diluted rate - like 1/2 strength max. So if you really want to use this thing then in theory you could put in 1 oz. and set it on 2 gallon mark and get 1/2 strength. Personally I'd set it on a high number mark. Your choice. Dave

The fertilizer will specify the dilution needed, and the hose-end sprayer can be set to yield that dilution. It comes down to reading the instructions on the fertilizer and the sprayer. Most sprayers come with a dial that you can set to the number of ounces/tablespoons/teaspoons need to be diluted in a gallon of water, or the dilution ratio, like 6:1 versus 10:1.

Agreed Michael. Daconil is effective but does leave white spots and residue. If you have to use any chemical, it's far better to use as little of it, as precisely as possible. A whale of a lot cheaper that way, too. Kim

Don't use a hose end sprayer. It's not accurate enough. You don't need to soak your roses in the solution, just give them a very fine spray to cover the leaves.

Use a tank or handheld sprayer.

That's not going to give you any kind of control over how concentrated your solution is, or how much of you it apply. You need a tank sprayer (about $20 at Home Depot). Mix according to the label directions and spray as a fine mist. You'll use a lot less material and get it on the leaves where it belongs instead of all over the place.

Ok, thanks. I will look for another sprayer that will work more precisly and coat the leaves with a finer spray. Probably is better anyways for anything else I decide to spray like fertilizers too. :)

It is impossible to get your spray where it needs to be,which is on the underside of the leaves.

Now a contrary word from the Queen of Spray....

The Gilmour brand hose end sprayer with meter dial is an excellent and reasonably precise, accurate sprayer. It costs about $20 and you can often find them at hardware stores, as well as online.

Use the spray stream diffuser to achieve a fine spray. It's not as fine as a mist. The Gilmour is powerful and you can spray 100 roses in less than 10 minutes.

For spraying Daconil or wettable powders such as Manzate, I follow the sprayer directions for "pre-mixing" the chemicals.

It also helps to use a surfactant in the mix to aid in a more even application of the spray.

Be careful with that Daconil. It has a tendency to cause leaf burn, especially in hot weather.

I've used the Gilmour for the past 8 years. I use it for gardens large and small. It's my go-to sprayer. It's an extremely versatile tool.
