Oh dear heaven--pruning accident--what do I do?

I am a novice gardener. I was pruning ut the dead wood on the rose (likely a Dr. Huey graft) and though I did proceed a few inches at a time and thought I knew what I was doing, I accidently took off this cane.

It's about half my "bush."

Here's a close-up of the stem:

Can I save it somehow?

It's been with me over ten years, content to have been neglected.

I can't believe I did this!

Don't worry about it--it will grow back.

Seriously, it is a good idea to occasionally take out old canes to encourage the plant to replace them with new ones that bloom more. I'm not sure, but I think there is enough time for a new cane in your climate to harden off enough for winter.

There's nothing I can do with this thing I accidently cut off, then?

Hi there, I started doing the same buckwheats you mentioned as well as some others and this is the 3rd season for some. The St. Catherine's Lace are already about 4 feet tall and came through winter with all their leaves in tact as well as buds for this season's flowers. I have one variety that I believe is fasciculatum and is about 4 feet tall with pom pom type flowers that last all season and start out light pink and go to white and then rust. Since I started planting the buckwheats I seem to be seeing more of the smaller butterflies like the blues and grays. This winter I also tried covering some of the less hardy plants like the lantanas and they did very well so I have added a bunch more. Actually, the ones I didn't cover survived the winter cold well also. I have worked so hard the past couple of weeks digging and composting and weeding and planting so I also hope it will be a great butterfly summer. Last week I saw my first Gulf Frit which is a record for me as the earliest I have ever seen one in the past was July and some years not until one or two passed through in the fall. Like you I am probably going to grow some food for me too. The money is scarcer and scarcer and I get hungry too. I was blessed to have my now 12 year old german shepherd still with me which is an answer to prayer since he has bad arthritis in his knees and needs meds to be able to walk. But he is a trooper like his old man. (I flatter myself!) My pipe vine has definitely taken off big time and is coming up everywhere. And I have a great supply of passionvines of the caerulea persuasion. Where do you get your porter weed and what uses the cuphea? By the way, Misssherry, the lead you gave me on securing Sonset Lantana paid off very well. I got the plants on Saturday in great condition and already planted them. Now I realize that the flowers that I have been admiring in my lantana beds were the ones I got through you years ago. I couldn't tell because I planted them all together. I also decided to try a couple of others they had too so we'll see how they do. Thanks so much. Murray

As some of you older members know, I've had terrible problems with the deer. Yes, moth balls, hair (dog and human), whiz, and sprays all work for a while. But once they get used to a smell, it doesn't bother them. And when they get hungry enough, they'll eat ANYTHING! I've put up 7 foot deer fence around the whole ten acres, and they can still get in, when they want to. They can be crafty! I've learned though, that if you can re-route them in the spring, when they really get into browsing habit and making their food paths, you can route them off your property...for the most part. Honestly don't think there's any true cure for the deer...other than a rifle! I haven't gone THAT far...yet! LOL!

To bzamp58 Hi, I make and decorate cakes. I have NO trouble at all with my recipes for doing cakes. I always use the roller. Just make sure you do the wet ingredients first. The add the dry. My cakes are light, moist, fluffy. (As with all recipes and the DLX the wet should go in first dry last). Thanksgiving...Whip Cream! My granddaughter is not too familiar with my DLX...was using white bowl and beaters, she said I can do the whip cream Gram. Huh well we had chunky almost butter whip cream! The look on her face was priceless. How we laughed! Just added a tablespoon of cream to the 2 cups whipped and consistency was fine for the pumpkin pie! And I am thrilled this year to have my DLX for all my Christmas cookie orders! So much easier! Last year I used my 1980 Kitchen Aid and did 3000 cookies in three weeks. I had been so booked with wedding cookies so got a late start! Still got a late start this year cause we did a total "kitchen make-over"! But now my wonderful DLX and new kitchen...I am so blessed! Time to get Pecan Tassies out of oven. May all have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Is that photo of the portion of the cane that you removed? That brown pith needs to be cut back if it is still on the plant. Your rose will survive, if you are in a moderately warm zone, give it some soaked alfalfa.

I wasn't very clear, was I?

Carla17--does that bit in the bottom photo look bad? It's so hard to tell "good" wood from wood which should be pruned.

Yes, these photos are of the portions I removed. I've tied up the one cane--is it cane or stem? which remains.

Should I post pictures of it? What parts do you need to see?

I was pruning the short bit you see in the top of the bottom photo when I made the "devasting" cut. The bright green bit growing on it can be seen to the left as a bit of foiliage way down at the bottom of the stem/cane in the top photo.

The other, yellowish bit supported the stuff in the top picture. (I wasn't paying attention to my camera settings when I took it. Apologies for the painful photo.)

There are a million ways it seems to root roses. You have to find a way if you want go to the rose propagation forum.

Scrap, make sure the pith, inside portion of cane, that is left on live rose is white. If it's brown, cut back until you see white.
I know what you mean, it's confusing sometimes to tell bad wood unless it's dark brown or black.
I hope this helps. You can fertilize if you're not in a cold area. If you stated where you live, I missed it.

ThanksCarla17. It looks white. I tried to get a picture but the sun is shining on it so strongly at the moment that it's just whited out.

I'm in Zone3b, Canada. We'll be having our first frosts in about 8-9 weeks, I believe.

And I can't take any credit for its ID--that was done by petzaloid (did I spell that right?)
