Rebar archways

I told my husband about all the rebar creativity on this forum and he became inspired. Also, I had 200 baby roses that eventually, at least for some of them, needed support!

He and my son, John, designed, cut and welded about 15 archways and one pergola. Some are bigger than others.

The rusting rebar looks very good in the garden and isn't very noticeable. And the roughness of the rebar helps the roses climb. We do tie them up to get them started. The archways are so strong that my kids swing on them and climb up. Great fun all around!

This is the third year for my garden which is no-spray. Most of the roses are doing fine.

And here is a picture for Jeri! This is Secret Garden Musk Climber on both sides of this pergola. Jeri answered all my questions before we planted these 2 roses. They are 3 years old. Thanks, Jeri!

I have not built one, but have been keeping an eye out when I go anywhere to see what other people are doing as I am in need of several arches, and I just happened to see something similar today. It looked very nice. I couldn't tell if they had used pvc, because not only did they have a panel of lattice over the archway, they had run a strip of lattice down each pole, too. But I think the pvc would work for sure. You could easily make this double, or square. And although my DH was going too fast for me to get a picture of it, he did point out that when using pvc the top doesnt have to be flat, there are different angles of fittings, so you could have a rounded or gothic top, depending on what connecting pcs you use. Concreteprimroses, it hadn't dawned on me you could actually buy more decorative kinds, I figured it was made special. I will have to look at our smaller hardware stores, I love lattice. I was lucky, a neighbor gave me all his old wood lattice he took off the bottom of his house when he closed it in. It is the traditional kind, tho I like the square kind better, I'm glad to have it to play with. I like this idea a lot, Lavender Lass.

Hoov, I enjoyed reading your blog and looking at the pics of that rebar arch. I tried to think of how many sumo wrestlers it would take to hoist that much rebar. It is really a beautiful arch. Thanks for posting it. I need to make friends with 6 sumo wrestlers and a guy with a torch. My dh told me I'd need a crane too. details, details...

Marlene, I wouldn't worry about roses freezing here in Sacramento. Of the roses in my yard and the Sacramento cemetery, only one showed any effect from last winter's freeze. That was 'Lamarque,' whose leaves and tips of new growth showed some signs of burn. It came right back. Nothing else was hurt, including the hundreds of baby roses that we had propagated and were setting out in the open. As warm as it's been, cutting the canes now might stimulate new growth, but since many roses hardly go dormant here even in January, it's not a great concern of mine. I just try to secure or shorten canes before the winter storms begin. I'd rather avoid damage from the canes breaking - last year, I found 'Zephirine Drouhin' canes all over my back yard after one wind storm. I try to wait to prune until mid-December, and end when the sap is running or buds are breaking in mid-Feb. Come out to the Sacramento cemetery some Wed or Sat morning and see the roses, and say "hi"! Anita PS Sorry, Sammy, if I hijacked your thread.

Yes, ADK=Adirondack. :-) Just went to visited 2 local nurseries on my scooter, but they don't sell roses. There is another nursery 10 miles away, it might have roses. I will check it out later by car, didn't bring my big bike, riding a little 50cc Honda Ruckus, top speed 42 mph, can only carry 1 rose (potted). :-) It's pretty cold at night and morning, now warmed up to 72. I haven't seen any roses in people's gardens here. I will post some photos of Palatine nursery next week :-) SoFL rose, thanks for the info. The shipping is not cheap, I'd wait for Palatine in Sept for bare root roses, unless I find some bargains next week at Palatine. There is a $25 charge for a certificate entering the U.S. with live plants. I will find one sooner or later., really love this rose. :-)

I thought my arch of SGMC was impressive . . . This will be spectacular.

Wow! Those are intricate! Aren't you glad to have something that will stand the test of time? Your husband and son are to be commended on a job well done.

They remind me of the wooden rustic arbors at Roseraie de l'Hay. They had those sort of angles, lending both added strength and stability and more interest.

Puts my simple little rebar arches to shame. Thanks so much for posting the photos!
