Are Mimosa (silk tree) that bad?

I saw several in bloom today. My mom and I took a shopping trip towards Pittsburgh and saw many along the way. I've heard they are crap trees, but do they last art least 5 years? I have Brackens brown Mag, Southern Mag with plain evergreen leaves and wouldf love to add the Mimosa for 5 years at least in the front, I have some palms that if protected in winter will do okay. Is Mimosa a bad idea for about a 5 year life expectancy. Does it have thorns or something that will cause disease or any big problems? I know it is a short-lived tree but 5 years life expectancy should be rational, right?

Yeah. I bet you get ten years. Problem is they are very invasive. Drive along I270 here between Hazelwood and Maryland Heights. Dozens of them which have escaped cultivation are visible this time of year.

I bet they keep redbuds and dogwoods from sprouting up. Probably make oak seedling less likely to survive also.

Mimosa will certainly live longer than five years. I believe ten to twenty years is the average. They grow wild on my property here in Georgia and are an invasive species. I don't think they are that bad. Mimosa doesn't bother me at all like the other invasive plants I have to deal with like Chinese privet and kudzu. Check out the 'Summer Chocolate' cultivar. That's what I'd plant, but I am obsessed with purple leaves. There are probably some alternatives that you should consider. Golden Rain Tree comes to mind. Hopefully other people will make some recommendations. It's too bad it would be almost impossible to find a Korean Mimosa (Albizia coreana) around. It is probably less invasive than the common one.

Krycek1984, I want to address a few points brought up in your post. First, there's really need for more personal attacks. There were enough of those already in this thread. While I sometimes disagree with iforgotitsonevermind, she certainly isn't generally ignorant, and even when she and I see things in almost totally opposite ways, I don't think she tries to be arrogant. Maybe she gets a little over excited, but don't well all. Iforgotitsonevermind's concern was not whether mimosa is currently considered an invasive pest in the area, but whether it had the potential to be in the near future. Your assurance that it "will not become an invasive species unless global warming goes crazy", falls short of convincing me. As I said above, I'm not convinced that it will ever become a problem, but your assertion, that it's not even close, doesn't convince me the other way, either, and seems to be based more on feeling than proof. Your question about who cares if you plant Bradford pears can have many answers including a number of invasive plant groups (which are concerned about their damage to the environment in many areas), neighbors (who worry about the trees falling over the property line onto their car, producing a foul smell, or making the neighborhood ugly when they fall apart at an early age), and those that want to share information they've learned from their mistakes or observations.

We took Amtrak from NY to Florida a few years ago. All you saw was Mimosa's growing along the tracks, in the tracks, everywhere in places no one mowed. From North Carolina down to Florida. You couldn't see anything from the windows of the train except forests of Mimosa's. Now that we live in Sarasota, my neighbor has one, just one tree which invades all my flower beds. They sprout inside large bushes like Hybicus, Jasmine, Gardenias, etc. I am constantly pulling them out of flower beds. They will grow wherever you don't mow. They are difficult to remove. They make big seed pods which the wind carries all over the neighborhood. Many of the seedlings do not show until they are tall and so difficult to pull out. I would never recommend anyone planting this tree. They might not invade your yard (but they will), but your neighbors yards.

dappled shade: mimosa (silk tree) or locust?

I have several purple robed locusts. They are very beautiful with dappled shade. Their branch structure is more spare than other locusts. They have multiple suckers coming up which are black locusts, more dense with white flowers. I need the shade so I'm letting the suckers grow. The suckers have long sharp thorns. Have 4 mimosas. They are late to leaf out. Their leaves stay late in Autumn. Flowers are nice and fluffy. Light shade. Squirrels use these trees to access the roof, fun to watch them scurry. The locusts are more drought tolerant. Both trees like heat and sun, and the mimosa wants a lot of water. The locusts will get taller than the mimosas. I planted these trees on a raised bed patio for dappled shade, and because I need trees there that will enjoy the full blasting sun over the roof. The raised bed patio is a good size and is flagstoned (hand-sized gaps between stones) and I needed a tree with very aggressive strong roots to bind all the dirt in the patio together -- the purple robed locust has very aggressive ropey roots that travel far and has been the perfect tree to bind the patio. There's creeklets alongside the bottom of the patio raised bed so once those locust roots hit the creeklets it can slurp up all the water it desires. Some folks do not like mimosas but I do, very pretty in summer, birds flock to them. Have seen old ones make a lovely umbrella canopy. Also have a shademaster locust, nice rich green, and several neighbors have very beautiful golden locusts.

Golden raintree is no prize either. I found it very weedy in Georgia and was pulling seedlings out of my yard and my neighbors' yards constantly. Then I just cut it down.

Mimosa is "bad" because it is invasive. Mostly in the south but obviously working it's way north now if you are seeing it on the side of the road. As temperatures continue to moderate in the years ahead, it will become invasive in the northeast, I predict, just like tree of heaven has.

Growing up NYC, the tree was almost a dominant tree species in urban areas of Brooklyn and Queens County decades ago so they have been in the 'North' for a while now. I must confess I thought the trees gorgeous in bloom let alone the feathery foliage. They seem to do best in highly urbanized environments (perhaps where nothing else survived!)--similar to Ailanthus. Now that I am in a more suburban area (though still in the immediate NYC Metro Area and same gardening zone), I hardy ever see them. They are rarely planted, nice specimens are unknown to me, and they are almost never sold in local nurseries. I was told by a nurseryman a few years ago, that some virus or blight did a number of them in. The only place I still see them is along the highways, but only rarely. I don't grow one now or even find them as attractive as in the past. I know they are listed as an invasive in NJ but after doing years of weeding in a rather sizable yard, I have yet to find one growing wild. Any number of other plants (many sold in nurseries) seem infinitely weedier. Am assuming they might be a bigger problem tree in warmer winter areas of the Southeast.
