rhody from nursery has shallow, fine roots

When I brought this rhody home from the nursery, I thought it had to be root-bound. I was very surprised when I lifted it out of the pot.

Right out of the pot, in moist potting soil, this somewhat dry-looking rhody had no root ball, just a 3-4" soft layer of just enough filamentous root to hold some soil.

This rhody doesn't look great, but it doesn't look really sick. There are a few dead leaves, or parts of leaves, and the foliage and buds do look and feel dry, leathery. The buds, which should be close to blooming, feel almost hollow.

I followed the thread for root rot, but I don't know whether this is likely to be root rot. All the example photos look much worse than this one.

Is there any particular set of steps I can go through to diagnose and save this nice rhody? I've never seen a woody plant like this, straight from the nursery, that didn't have a tough twisted bundle of roots filling out the pot all the way to the bottom.

I'm hoping that the plant, which looks pretty good, is making a sacrifice of the buds for this year as it struggles to recover from some insult. Is there a way to support root growth while I nurse it through? Or is it a poor prognosis when there is no strong root system? What should I say to the nursery, if anything?

You are probably better off with the root system you describe than with the tight mass of pot bound roots so frequently encountered. If you see healthy white root tips, you have no worries about rot. The foliage and buds may just be showing the effects of winter conditions. Make sure the roots are moist when you plant and do not let them dry out excessively this summer. It certainly would not do any harm to ask the nursery about this plant, but it really sounds as if it's pretty typical of over-wintered plants that may have suffered from lack of moisture at some point.

Thank you! That's encouraging. I really appreciate good advice.

Putting it in the ground, should I use a mixture with sand? Or any particular balance of nutrients, perhaps a starter soil or a transplanting soil?

Does it sound as if those buds will flower? If they are not going to bloom, shall I pick them off to rest the plant? Is there a single preventive protocol to help a compromised plant resist disease? An immune system support?

1 oz. and 2 oz. is very small. I sometimes use a condiment cup for very tiny babies but unless I am playing with micro-minis, that is too small. You can use square pots and I have done it. However, I stopped because the plants seemed to grow somewhat more irregularly than in a round one and it was harder to move them into a round pot. Violet Barn sent me a free standard in a square pot. I have a lot of small square pots from Novosel (they look just like everyone else's I think), including a smaller size that isn't made any more. As I noted before, the square ones do hold more soil so you are actually using a "bigger" pot with a 3" square than a 3" round. Customs fees might make it impractical to order but it's hard to find the 4" "squatty" pots (azalea) or the 3" round ones. They had the nice small 2'1/4" ones recently but they've vanished. Diana

a pic would sure help us understand ... but the bottom line.. trees put roots where THEY WANT THEM ... who in the world do you think you are.. thinking that you can outsmart that tree??? .. lol ... provide a nice mulch ring of a few feet round ... trickle the water for an hour or so .. i mean TRICKLE ... it will soak in.. and step away from the tree ... IT WILL TAKE CARE OF ITSELF .... w/o the pic.. i can not suggest if pruning for shape might be necessary .... to get it growing up straighter ... but again.. given 10 years.. it will TAKE CARE OF ITSELF ... if its been heavily shaded.. do not be surprised if its leaves burn a bit ... they arent used to sun ... and do understand.. it is not a child.. it will NOT need to be fed.. nor diapered.. nor educated .... and.. in fact.. if you are renovating the lawn anywhere within 20 feet.. it will get whatever it might need.. as the years roll by.. the forest of acacia... indicate to me.. that your soil in NOT lacking for anything ... and your oak is not suffering in that regard .. forest trees.. grow in forests ... water competition is probably its only problem... along with lack of sunshine.. and you have solved both those.... now.. dont go killing it with too much love... it simply wont need much from you.. now that you got rid of the competition ... come back with those pix.. if you want to learn about pruning ... good luck ken

First, digging a hole of the type you might create for a tree is counter productive. Much better to plant on the surface or create a wide, shallow depression. Second, putting rocks in a hole (or pot) actually makes the drainage worse, not better. Third, don't use peat at all. The stuff available in bales everywhere is dust-fine, dies out with astonishing speed and then actually repels water. The best planting medium, IMHO,for rhododendrons and related species is coarse, but partially decomposed softwood bark. The bark has mild anti-fungal properties itself, but it's chief benefit is that it supplies the roots with vital oxygen while still maintaining moisture.

You face several problems in the Denver area. There are some areas with natural wind drainage from the mountains where hurricane force winds are not uncommon. I am familiar with one such area between Boulder and Denver. Also, when Littleton was a new community, people were having trouble getting any kind of tree started. You will be facing several problems. 1) Alkaline Soil. Raised beds are the best solution for this. Rhododendrons and azaleas have shallow roots, so a raised bed that is 12 to 15 inches high is normal. Use a good acidic soil that is well drained. 2) Alkaline Water. The raised bed won't help if you use alkaline water. Use only rain water including water collected in cisterns or neutralized water. 3) Winter wind and sun. These are serious problems. A wind break and some winter shade are necessary. Summer sun is not trivial either. Some summer shade is necessary. 4) Hardy plants. Being from Idaho, you are probably familiar with this problem. All azaleas and rhododendrons have a characteristic hardiness. Winter hardiness and summer hardiness are both important. They usually go together. The best "soil" for rhododendrons contains at least 25 to 50% organic matter. In this case, err on the side of lots and lots of organic matter. Shredded conifer bark, especially if it is partially decomposed, is an excellent additive. So are conifer needles. Sand is useful, but probably not necessary. You want a planting area with a diameter of 3 to 4 feet. It doesn't need to be any deeper than a foot. Providing ideal conditions for root growth and watering with just a trickle at the plant's base when necessary is much better than trying to push things with any sort of fertilizer, which can do more harm than good.

If the flower buds feel hollow, you will likely get only partial bloom, if any. The outermost florets can be killed by cold leaving only the inner ones capable of producing flowers. There's no harm in waiting to see what happens, but dead heading after bloom so that none of the plant's energy goes into seed production is important.

There are various fungicidal drenches, but they have limited usefulness and are pretty nasty. Better to keep a close watch for lacebugs and other pests that can damage the leaves and stress the plant. These can be dealt with using low impact pesticides such as insecticidal soap.

BTW, it would be useful to know the name of this variety. If it's one of the "good doers" you should have no problems. More exotic varieties may require more patience, but should be fine in the end.
