Can I expose the flare of Maple tree in the future?

Well I finally had my Maple Tree replaced (Autumn Blaze). The original one was planted two years ago and never did well. Leaves turned color early and was infested with a type of hard shell scale that I could not get rid of. After going back to the nursery and working with a 3rd party arborist they agreed to replace it.

They removed and then planted the tree on 5/21 luckily before some of the hot weather came along. I was on a trip and coming home I was more caught up in making sure it was receiving the proper amount of water than to the planting. The tree seems to be doing as well as can be expected for being a late spring planting. Most of the leaves are still on and bright green. There was a small nick in the trunk and that is healing over quite well also.

My question is, the tree was planted like a telephone pole. I could not see a flare what so ever. So a week ago I removed about 2-3 inches of soil digging around the trunk in an effort to find the flare. No luck. Then today I removed another two inches and while the trunk is definitely much fatter and look likes a root should be coming out very soon I have yet to see one. My fear is that I am disturbing the tree too much now and there is a deep ring/hole around the trunk. Should I keep going in an effort to find the flare even though the weather is really heating up and I was hoping to just concentrate on moisture/keeping leaves on to help it produce roots? My thought was next year I could then dig down some more and try to even the ground so it does not look so odd. What do I do with this ring/hole? I assume I do not put mulch up to it.

Or should I continue on and find the flare at all costs?

On a side note, how do these tree grow so great at the tree farm, yet they are buried at least 6 inches too deep. The farm I was at had hundreds of these Maple trees that went from 1" to 6" caliper trees and they all look so vibrant and healthy.

Thanks in advance.
