Annual Pre-germination Jitters

What? you say? I don't remember THAT from the FAQs. Annual Pre-germination jitters. It's not in the FAQs, but it is a very real part of winter sowing. It is characterized by tremendous amounts of doubt and anxiety. You begin to wonder whether you'll have any sprouts at all. It makes you wonder if you've been had. It leads to nightmares wherein the neighbors ask whatever happened to the milk jugs and you must explain sheepishly you were the victim of the most elaborate hoax of all time. Hundreds of people online who make a hobby of misleading you into believing you can sow seeds in milk jugs and get plants. Those con artists went so far as to send you free seeds and post pictures of their own results online. Just to see if you're buying into the scheme they ask you to post publicly how many containers you've sown. And you start thinking you've wasted your money too. That $10 spent on a roll of tape, a sharpie and postage for SASBEs could have been much better spent on one, maybe two perennials at the local nursery.

Or maybe your anxiety is not rooted in fear of a cult at work. Maybe it's just that you devoted your entire winter to making a mess of your kitchen. You endured snide remarks from your spouse and whining about late dinner from your kids. You put it all on the line, and now the day of reckoning is near. Oh what have you done?!?!?! This couldn't possibly work, and you knew better.

Lastly, you fear you did it all wrong. Maybe so, maybe not. Fortunately, seeds have historically endured much greater abuses than yours, and still managed to thrive as plants.

The good news is, sprouts are just around the corner. Your fears and doubts will be quickly set aside. Pre-germination jitters are well established in the WS chronicles, so if you are experiencing this phenomenon, you are in good company. Hang in there. Sprouts are coming.
