First bloom of the season - native red azalea

I don't know which azalea this is. It is only lightly fragrant and the fragrance is spicy. We are having lots of pine pollen these days, so it is a bit dappled with it.

Probably a deeply-colored Rhododendron austrinum since you mention a fragrance...or perhaps a hybrid with austrinum in its background.

Sure looks a lot like Clarence Towe's Keowee Sunset but that's R. calendulaceum x R. periclymenoides and should bloom in May.

Whatever it is it's beautiful! Thanks for the preview can't wait 'til mine get going up here!

Aren't new blooms the best? I am probably in the same zone as you, and my knockouts have just a couple of blooms open, too. In addition, my Lady Banks, Julia Child, Gruss An Auchen, Frontier Twirl and Carefree Beauty each new blooms, too. They are all just starting to open up - I am breathlessly awaiting the first flush. :) Oh - and, my crossvine just started blooming this week - it looks great (and the hummers love it, too!) I am really enjoying gardening this year - every day bring a new bloom of some kind. Yes, happy gardening to you!

Thanks, Laura, Marie, and Pagan! Yeah, i've developed a little bit of a social life but I may have to curb that as it distracts me from my adeniums! LOL Seriously just been having a lot of things going on. One of those in the group shot had a flower that was single layer red with a dark blue/black edging. The other looked like a bloom of Purple Rain but the bloom was not in best shape being in Walmart's garden department. Waiting on them both to bloom again so I can get a better look at them. Kirk

Carl Nielsen - interesting because the red pigment fades faster than the yellow. I I also feel it's a nice complement to the lavender roses. Novalis/Poseidon - really fantastic lavender! The colour is a bit darker than, say, Blue Moon or Mamy Blue, but still distinctly bluish (more so than Love Song, to my eyes). I also prefer its bloom shape to Love Song's, and it is at least as fragrant (though both are definitely light in fragrance). It doesn't like the heat, though. I put it in the greenhouse to protect it from the rain, and the blooms went totally crispy. Chartreuse de Parme - again! The colour is very variable, from rich magenta to medium pink and soft reddish violet. I do find all three colours attractive (unlike the variation exhibited by Princess Alexandra of Kent), and the perfume is lovely. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe - a Tantau rose. So far, it's not very floriferous, but the blooms are large and fragrant.

Beauty! I love these deciduous azaleas. It is very early blooming for sure, right on time for austrinum, but the flower doesn't look much like that species. I would vote for a hybrid origin on this one with austrinum in it and perhaps calundulaceum, cumberlandense, or flammeum as well. It's a keeper! Where did you get it? PF

I got it 3-4 years ago on an approved plant rescue on a 500 acre hunting preserve in Georgia that was being converted to a subdivision. It is almost certainly a natural hybrid. We also found r. canescens on the same site.

Thanks for giving me tips on what it's parentage might be.

I finally got most of my rescued azaleas in strong enough sun to produce blooms on most plants. I'll try to take some more pictures as they bloom.
