Japanese maple loosing leaves already

I have an 'Orido Nishiki' that is about 6 years old in the same place it's been since we bought it. It receives part shade and had up until this summer always done very well, grew quickly and had beautifully colored leaves. After a very cool and wet spring and start to summer it's leaves on the upper half of the tree started turning colors like it would normally do in September. Now it has begun to lose it's leaves, it looks pretty healthy other than it looks more like what you would see it like in the fall rather than summer. Is it possible that it's weather related? The soil here is pretty well amended and everything else growing in the flower bed looks great and healthy.

Thanks!
