Hmm, worse than a drummer next door? Someone I know had a bagpipe player next door. Now I happen to like bagpipe music but it's not everyone's cup of tea. And even I would not like to hear it next door in a close-built neighborhood. My own experience is that rust is a problem that is worse in spring and fall. In the midst of summer only susceptible roses seem to suffer from it. I do remember though that on the El NiÃ±o year about 10-12 years ago, all the roses had it, pretty much all summer long. It may just be that you are experiencing a local pocket of rust-inducing conditions this year. Someone twenty miles away may not have the same things going on that you are. Rosefolly

The perfect rose is in the eye of the beholder. Some people find perfection in the rose's ability to stay healthy, and grow in the manner we hope, with little attention. The romantic in me, finds perfection in the flower itself - scents that make me stop to smell the rose, as well as the perfection in its form. I'm drawn to the damasks and gallicas over the traditional tea shapes and don't have a hybrid tea anywhere in my garden. That said, David Austin's first rose, Constance Spry, is beautiful in flower. It is cup-shaped and reminiscent of the roses in the old Dutch master paintings. Very cabbage-rosy and it draws me in.

I could probably sit down and write a whole book about this. The concept is fascinating to me. The book "The Secret Garden" had a profound influence on me. After reading it for the first time many years ago I became aware of the idea of the garden as metephor and gardening as a transformational experience. A secret is a mystery. One is first intrigued by the existence of the secret and is then lead on to the place where it may or may nto quite be reveiled. A good way for me to give you some ideas is to describe Jon's garden. You can't see it as you approach. There is a tall hedgerow by the road, but you do see a few errant blooming rose canes falling over. You enter the garden through a rose covered gate. You pass through into an enchanted rose garden all pastels and soft greens. You can't see all the garden at one time. Charming paths draw you on. There is clematis growing through mnay of the rose bushes. All around are tall wild walls of ramblers climbing and tumbling. You pass a small timeless looking bird bath. Around a corner you find a tree that has roses and clematis climbing through and hanging down. Else where you find a bench enclosed in a little roofed structure that you can sit in unobserved. Though this is not at all a large garden you feel as though you could wander for a long time making new discoveries. This is Jon's secret garden.

Well I am quite excited to see all the different miniatures here. Have not unfortunately spent the time on galleries as I would have liked lately, but I am trying to keep up. I LOVE all these miniatures. I should put this thead in my favourites - I will, as I really am a newby at minis and I would like to keep track of some of these beauties so I may order some in the future. My daughter gave me a check for mother's day last year and I needed some colour in a certain space in the garden. I was at our local supermarket and they had the most beautiful little minis, and I thought, that's what I want to purchase for my gift. I think I bought eight, I was quite thrilled with them - could not believe the height some of them attained in such a short while. Only problem of course is that they were not named, typical supermarket - if anyone can guess, then that would be nice. But here are two that I actually took pics of. Now this one had a little surprise! :smile Anyway, up until then, I only had one mini which was gifted to me and I think Les has it too, Lavender Jewell.
