I'm about to become a betta fish caretaker....

Let me start out by saying - I have never cared for a fish before.

But now I have decided to start with a betta fish. He/she will be living in my home office and probably will get a lot of company from my cat Sophie (and me of course, but Sophie is home more than I am...). There appear to be very few useful books available on betta care so I've been using online resources a lot - suggestions for helpful links would be appreciated....

I have no fish yet, but I have purchased a mini-bow 2.5 gal aquarium, that I hope will be Sophie proof. Some gravel and cleaning supplies (dechlorinater, algae scrub pad, siphon, fish net). I hope 2.5 gal is enough for 1 betta fish. I haven't set it up yet, and I can return it for a 5 gal - but I hope 2.5 is good.

My questions:

1) Is 2.5 gallons enough for a single betta?

2) Do I need to cycle the aquarium before adding the betta? I intend to have the aquarium set up and running for at least 7-10 days before I add the betta because I want to monitor the ph, water temp, etc. for awhile.

3) I keep my thermostat in the 60s n the winter. I realize that is too low for a betta, although he will be in the warmest room in the house. Is there a good heater for a 2.5 gal aquarium in case the light doesn't provide enough heat?

4) I have 'shopped' for betta fish at a couple of petstores (both chains), a chain aquarium store and I'm about to go to a local aquarium store that gets good reviews. I am researching how to recognize a healthy betta.....but just in case my emotion overcomes me or he turns out not to be all that healthy....does it make sense to provide him with some kind of general preventative medical care as soon as he gets to his new home, just in case? What kind of care would be good?

5) Which seems like a better idea - a silk plant or a live plant (or two - how much can a small aquarium handle?)?

Okay that's enough questions for now, I'm sure more will follow...any help I can get is much appreciated. Bettas seem to have a pretty short life span as it is, I don't want to shorten it even more out of ignorance on my part....

Absolutely yes... and I would strongly suggest that you monitor the Ammonia / Nitrites / Nitrates with a kit that your local fish shop sells. And I would start with a feeder guppy to help cycle the tank.

There are plenty sold that are more than adequate for the gallonage. Ask your LFS what he or she recommends. 80 F is a good temp.

Pick one that seems active, with no bacterial or parasitic issues... mabe one that has produced a bubblenest and has pugilistic intentions with the Betta in the bowls nest to his. The best care is one that matches temperature and pH of both the Betta bowl in the store and the tank you have.

I like living aquatic plants, like Water Sprite. I used to breed them in that material.

Thank you for your response petiolaris.

I now have an Eclipse 6 - is that like a 'betta mansion' for just one fish?:)

I'm in search of heaters, etc. I will cycle the tank so I guess it will be some time before I have a fish. Thanks for the plant suggestion too, seems the Water Sprite will work in a small aquarium. I will get the plants from my LFS, hopefully the same one I'll get the fish from....now I just have to decide which LFS I trust.

FrozenMyst, There are lot of medications out there for fish. Be sure you check the smytoms and facts of what medicine you should get. I hope your Betta's home is NO smaller then 1 gallon of water with filtration. Or is he swimming in his waste like so many Bettas end up? If he is, water changes are needed. I have heard of pros and cons of distilled water. I would get purifed water. You can get that at your local fish store or market. Or make your own...Aqua Pharmecutical Tap water purifer. You can find it on ebay or at Dr. Foster & Smith. I use it for my 10 gallon aquarium and Orchids. You need to get one of those cheap water test sticks to see what condition the water is. I thought I had bought purified water from the market and when I tested it is was no better then the tap water. Theresa

Is your fish alright? When the power went out during an ice storm, a neighbor warmed water on her camping stove outside and added it to the aquarium (scooped water from aquarium into a big stainless bowl, added hot water, checked the temp of the water in the bowl and the aquarium.....etc). The fish made it.

Sammy- IME, betta's will hang out once in a while on plants for a quick "rest" but usually respond to movement within the room, or will usually surface and wait for food or just to "say hello". The biggest concern with "the general" is laying on its side. Not good at all. The picture looks like a small bowl with no filtration or temperature control. Depending on your location the water could be getting too cold and the fish's metabolism will slow and he will become lathargic. But that usually affects eating, and yours seems to be eating. This leads me to believe that he is sick or the water is toxic with ammonia or nitrites. If you keep a betta in a bowl with no filtration you really have to monitor ammonia levels. I don't know who's book you are following, but any amount of ammonia is toxic to fish, any type fish. The only way to remove ammonia from an unfiltered aquarium is to change the water daily to remove or at least dilute the ammonia. The ammonia comes from decaying uneaten food and fish waste. Ammonia can be detected after as little as 12 hours from uneaten food. In larger aquariums (and very small ones to) a "bio-filter" is created from helpful bacteria that converts the ammonia and nitrites in to less harmful nitrate. Nitrate is pretty harmless to fish unless it builds up over 40ppm. The nitrate is removed from weekly or bi-weekly partial water changes (PWC's). This is what happens in a natural eco-system. Also plants (live ones) cycle the amm. and Nitrite to nitrate. Plants do this and use the nitrate as food. To keep "The General" in command, get a larger aquarium. I would say at least 5 gallons, with filtration and a heater. Minimally the 5G with a heater and some hearty plants like a Java Fern. Just improving the water conditions will improve his health and longevity. I know the Betta is marketed in a way that makes it seem like a no effort way to keep fish. IMO it is just exploited for its attributes as a survivor. Truth is more often then not these fish don't survive as long as they should or could.

What is happening to the food he Doesn't eat??? Is it staying in the tank, where it will rot, and quickly foul the water. Foul water makes a stressed, sick fish. What IS the temperature of the water..........the warmer the better. When did you last change some water? Frequent small water changes, siphoning off waste from the tank bottom, are best. I dont' know where you are located but you can try putting him in a large container outside for a couple weeks (or more if you are in a warm climate). Right now it is in the 80s in NJ and they look, do great outside. A big container (5-gallon bucket, never used for detergents works great!), some water plants, and the natural sunlight and insects they get will make them very happy!). I would get a clean container. Add some clean water plus some water let it sit a day or two, add some water plants, than add your betta, get him outside in sunlight. Feed him some live food if you can get it. Mosquito larvae, white worms, small earthworms, pet stores often sell wingless fruit fly cultures which are also a great betta food.

The 6 is fine! Get a Visitherm stealth heater. Set it to 80.

Generally speaking, the best LFS's are the "mom & pop" places, where the owner has been in business for years. It's his or her hobby. The worst are chainstore / mall places that are really petshops, specializing in birds, cats, dogs, etc..., with tropical fish as a courtesy.
