voodoo lily...cobra I believe

I looked at several pictures and I will call this a cobra because of the type stalk. It looks like snake skin.

It is time to separate the babies and I have no idea how. I dug up the bulb and it has two tubes growing from it. How do I remove them to start two more plants? Not sure if I just break them off or cut the tips off.

You have a couple of options for dividing amorphophallus plants. First thing, you should be absolutely sure that there are no more bulblets hidden in the soil. I grew one on in a pot of aloes last year without even realizing it because I did not check the soil before repotting with it.
Next, find where the rhizome connects to the parent bulb. Use a sharp knife or clippers and sever the rhizome. Try not to cut the bulb. The bulblet will survive and the rhizome will shrivel.

I HIGHLY recomment using gloves of some kind. I got some nasty burns from unpotting mine last fall without gloves.

Okay, now I have another question after I looked at my bulb closely. My bulb is basically slick (other that having like little tits all over it) until I get to the rhizome. It basically has a small knott on the bulb and the rhizome grows from that knott, which at the tip or the rhizome is another knott and it is starting to bud. Do I cut at the bottom of the rhizome leaving the knott on the big bulb.

Wow, none of my VooDoo lily bulbs ever get that large. the largest one I have had was about 2" wide. They seem to multiply rather than get very large. I think my bulb was labeled Arum cornutum when I bought it however I believe the taxonomist now have it classified as Sauromatum glutatum but next week it may be something else. Those taxonomist are such fickled people. I had a good experience with this plant last spring but it shows my lack of experience with the plant and how as Krazyaroider said, the bulbs sprout when they are ready to. I have had this plant growing for about 3 years in a 2 gallon pot. I carry the pot through the winter in my garage which gets cold but does not freeze. This past spring the plant did not come up at all. I had sowed some red leafed millet seed in a portion of a very large (35 gallon) pot that had something else growing in it that died. I dug a portion of the millet out to give to a friend and decided to pour some of the soil from the VooDoo lily pot in to fill the void left after I removed the millet seedlings. When the soil went into the hole I realized the VooDoo lilies were still there but just not up yet. I scooped the soil along with the bulbs back into the original 2 gallon pot. I missed a very small bulb that was not much bigger than a pea. A single leaf came up in a few weeks; it was really small, perhaps 5 inches tall and 4 inches wide. The leaf which never seemed to get any larger persisted until the first of August then it died. As it was withering additional leaves began to come up in its place. Now there are probably 20 leaves with a few of them about 2Â½ feet tall. There are also additional bulbs that have come up around the main plant. This has become a massive plant. Karyn, Your voodoo is beautiful! They are so cool! I saw one in a book that was taller than the person standing next to it! One bulb on Ebay says it weighs 3 1/2 pounds!!! They must get to monster size!!! Thanks for all the info! Kylie...What is Daves Marketplace? I just find grocery stores when I look it up online. Please let me know as I am a bargain shopper. A pic would be an excellent idea--I'm a LOT confused! If you can't post a picture (I can't, so don't feel too bad!) try looking at the pictures on a good site like Plant Delights nursery, or ask for more recommendations. Maybe you can find a picture of yours, and then ask questions about how to treat it. There are so many that could be what you talk about. I first fell in love with something I later learned was an amorphophallus, but the owner only knew as a voodoo lily--I ordered everything I could find by that name until I finally found out what it was--not which species though. Still trying to get the right one! You could also be thinking of arisaema, and PDN has pictures of those too. They are often called cobra lilies I think.
