I have a little bit of recent experience with leaf shredders, so I'll throw my thoughts in here and you can take them for what they are worth. First I bought a chipper/shredder off ebay that is a 2.5 HP electric machine. In the pictures it looked like it had a bin on the top that I could put the leaves in. The bin is too shallow for that purpose though, although it makes nice mulch out of twigs. Next I bought a Flowtron leaf shredder. I had high hopes, but honestly, this thing is junk. It is like a string trimmer in a barrel, but less effective than if you put your leaves in a trash can and actually used a string trimmer to shred them. The strings break and have to constantly be replaced, not even making it through 1 bag of leaves. If the leaves are even slightly damp, that bogs the whole thing down. It's slow, clumsy and useless. I made it through 2 bags of leaves before just covering the thing with a tarp and walking away. Next I bought a Poulan Pro leaf vac that claims a 10 to 1 shredding capability. I had an extremely hard time getting it started. It's a gas powered 2-cycle engine machine. Very difficult to get and keep it started. However, after getting it started it did work, and worked fairly well, although I don't believe the 10-1 claims. After filling the bag twice I accidentally sucked up a peg with a cord on it that shut the machine down and it is currently awaiting repairs. So, pretty much, others have said a mulching mower is a good way to shred them, and I believe that is the way I should have gone. Also, putting the leaves in a trash can and going at it with the string trimmer shredded them for me as well as anything else, but my arms took a beating from all the leaf bits flying up. Good luck with your leaf shredding endeavors. I would have to say that I think a mulching mower would be the way to approach it, given all my failures.

I use a well known brand name electric powered convertible blower/shredder that will handle most leaves and leaf/pine needle mix. It has a shoulder strap and zippered bag, which I empty by spreading around plants, shrubs and trees. They usually cost about $50-60. I also have a large, 5hp shredder/chipper that I use for limbs(up to 3"), hedge & shrub trimmings and large quanities of pine needles and leaves. It also has a vac with a 6", 15'long flexible hose and a large bag. I use it a few times each year, mostly to reduce large quanities of collected material for spreading on paths and for the compost heap. Please don't buy a gasoline powered unit, since you may live in my neighborhood! I am already overwhelmed with noise and carbon monoxide pollution from the daily use by landscapers of every gasoline powered lawn tool known to man, all running simultaneously. Rb
